91 TII want aftermarket stereo?
I searched but not really clear. I really would like to keep the door speakers on the lows. Not just run a wire from the dash speaker.
I have a 91 TII. It has the six speaker system. And my right side (Door and shin speakers) have basicly died. They put out sound but very soft.
Not sure what is causing the failure (Not fade or balance). I tried spraying tuner cleaner in the *****. No luck. I am guessing the amp is dieing. I want to get an aftermarkey system.
My question is this. How do I retain the six speaker system with an aftermarket system. I like the door speakers getting the low bass. And letting the other four do mids and high.
Where are the amps. I know there is one on the passenger shin panel. However, there are none in the "chicken buckets" over the rear shock towers. I know they need to be bypassed. Any ideas?
Thanks
James

I'm looking at the same dilemma when I plan on swapping my stock stereo out for a cd head unit this coming spring.
Here's my understanding:
- Rear speakers and the under dash little 4" types are handled by the amp insided the tuner/cassette unit they are considered "full range"
- The door speakers are handled by two small individual amps each with a crossover inside to filter out anything but the low frequencies
I am unsure if you can connect an aftermarket head unit and retain this set-up. I know this wasn't much help, but it may jog something if you now know the schematic details.

Hum, that makes sense. The aftermarket head unit powers dash/shock speakers. Now maybe the head unit has a sub output. I am strickly talking from the hip though.
That would be what the door speakers are? Subs....that only get the lows? Crossover....hum.
Maybe I can call Crutchfields and sound like a potential customer

When i installed my subs in my car i used all the stock speakers as the highs and mids and just let the subs do the bumping. Once you put the new head unit in the old speakers will sound ten times better. My car sounded great with the 2 15's i built into the rear storage compartment altho my amp was underpowered.

you cant just wire the new head unit to the old amps for the door speakers it will over load them and they will die with in a week youll need to run some new wires to the doors. and just go ask some one how actually installes this stuff on how to get just te lows from those speakers

I just talked with Crutchfields. According to their computer they said that I could use the factory amps. I was warry of that.
He said if I want the door speakers to do lows the best option would be to get 6.5" woofers and power them with their own amp.
Or I could get a componet system. Have the 6.5" in the door. Put the tweeter in the dash speaker area (blah) or mount them high. Any thoughts?
