'91 auto trans - having trouble with shift lever
My Shift Lever has been loose for a month, but as of yesterday it won't shift into gear. It would shift into reverse, and then it wouldn't stick drive, after fiddling with it, I got it to work again, but haven't really fixed the problem. Right now, I have it taken all apart, but can't seem to figure out how to fix it. I am new to the area - CAN ANYONE RECOMMEND A GOOD MECHANIC FOR THIS - or does anyone want to help me fix it - I would pay you for your time. I can still drive it, but it's troublesome. THANKS!

Well, honestly-- a 5speed swap is the way to go if the auto tranny is toast.
What is it (not) doing? If it can shift into gear, but the car doesn't move at all, you may have broken the bands in the tranny. It would act like revving in neutral, while you are in drive...
Also, the plastic shift lever/button has two set-screws that hold it onto the actual shift lever. If the screws are loose the shifter plastic thing will be loose...
If the entire shifter is loose on the fulcrum, there is a bushing that is worn. I had the same problem, and I never fixed it before I did the 5spd swap.
