89 RX-7 Questions

Hi all, I'm new here and just had a few questions. I bought an 89 RX-7 off a guy who is the original owner, happened to have the original window sticker in the glovebox. How do you know if you have a GXL, GTU, or what? I know it's not a turbo....since it has no turbo, haha! But on the window sticker, the model is listed as a RX-7 GU 2P. What in the world is that? So how do you know what it is? Can you tell by looking at the VIN #? Or is it safe to assume it's just a base model car?

The car doesn't run, cranks over fine though. The guy I bought it from said toward the end of driving it (prior to parking it after he bought his wife a new car) he had to get it rolling then pop the clutch to get it started. From what I understand the car has been sitting close to a year without being ran. Can this be fixed to where it will be able to start just by using the key and cranking it over? I've been doing a little reading, and it looks like a possibility may be that the fuel injectors are leaking down. Anything else to look for? I had an 86 RX-7 back in high school 10 years ago, but it always ran like a top and I never really had to work on it other than oil changes. So I'm kinda of starting at point zero here, much appreciation to anyone willing to give some pointers!

As with any 15 year old car, I'm going to need some parts. One of the back tail lights is busted, his kid hit a baseball into it, so I'm going to need a drivers side tail light. Drivers sider mirror is gone from the door. He took it off backing his dually pickup truck back. Anyone have these parts? I'm willing to buy both tail lights and both mirrors if I have to. Any go-to people for parts on this message board? Any websites around that specialize in RX-7 parts?

Thanks in advance guys! I'm sure I'll be posting a little here and there!

If the car has no power options except for sunroof then it's probably a GTU. The engine might need a rebuild. You need to really read up on the site. The tail lights are very expensive as the 89+ lights look better than the old ones. I sold a cracked set for over $100. They can go for up to $250 for really nice ones. The Aero mirrors go for about $75 I believe. How much is the car? Sounnds like it's only worth a few hundred dollars. If you are frugal then you can probably get it up and running for a few hundred bucks.

Yeah, not only are those lights expensive, but they're hard to find too! I only gave a few hundred dollars for the car, so if I can't get it running pretty easy I'm hoping I can get out of it what I've put into it.

Thanks for the reply

hope it doesn't need a rebuild. is it common for these engines to go out at the 100,000 mile mark? it's got 109,000 miles on it. Can't imagine it being driven too hard, the couple I bought it from was in there 50's.

^ that means he bought it when he was 35, which is really different from 50

if these cars aren't taken care of (oil changes, routine maintenece) they go out just like a piston motor

In your opinion, i personally believe that the S4 lights fit the car better, and S5s look like a cheap knockoff of other manufacturers taillights.. IMO, S5s only look good when illuminated at night..

Thanks for the info Icemark! I don't mind the older looking tail lights, just would like to keep them the same as the car came though. But the older ones are definitely cheaper and easier to find. Guess it's time to hit some junk yards and see what all I can round up. Thanks for all the help guys, I really appreciate it.
