89 NA Exhaust questions...
Ok more stupid newbie tricks at work again
Ok 89 GXL NA from my understanding she has three cats two precats and one main. Guess this is the Ford in Mazda comming out again (Ford historicly has put at least 2 cats per exhaust)
My question is in CA has anyone replaced the three cats with a single hi-flow and not have emmissions troubles?
Why I ask is because my Apt. Complex uses some belly-kissing speed curbs and I'm just waiting for one of them to kill one of my cats.
I also figure as long as the question is open what would be a good pair of mufflers for my exhaust? Any recomendations?

People tend to use those Apex'i N1s alot, in the dual and single varieties. Some have the factory mufflers, some have Corksport.. it's all in how much you want to spend. But here's a few things I've noticed about rotary mufflers..
Straight through is preffered, as chambered mufflers tend to blow out. If you use a glass pack, make sure it's SS wool, otherwise it'll blow out pretty fast.

I bet CA emissions are really stringent.
I know that alot of people have put alcohol mixtures in their Ported motors to pass Emissions......So I'm sure you could do a highflow and use this technique.
If you searched the site for it I bet you come up with something because....well, I hate saying search, But I can't remember where I read it last week or so.
Anyway, you could get by I bet.
But maybe someone else knows about the Alch. Proceedure in a non-ported motor with a highflow.

Former Moderator. RIP Icemark.
#1 The 89-91 RX-7 only has two cats, a pre-heater and the main cat.
#2 it is almost impossible for a "belly-kissing speed curbs" to damage anything but the main cat.
#3 many people have passed the actual emissions test with one high flow cat, however you will not pass visual. If you are convinced that this is the way you want to go, check out the Bonz downpipe with highflow and resonator, or highflow dual cat (of course the "belly-kissing speed curbs" still can damage the highflow main cat just as easy as the stock cat).

The only reason I'm asking is because my front struts (along with the whole suspenstion) are completely shot. Baby has 212K miles on her and even though she was maintained impeckibly many worn out items on her were nerver repaired. Worst is her suspenstion seems she has a lot of sprung bushings including the sway bar bushings in the front and maybe a lower control arm bushing (still havent looked yet). But, first on the list is front struts they are about as blown as you can get. Oh, more newbie mind tricks here, Does the front end need to be aligned after replacing the struts? I havent looked at it yet so yes you can call me lazy.
