89+ N/A intake swap write up

Hey all, I finished getting the write up for swapping the 89+ intake onto an 86-88 motor. You can find a link to it on the bottom of the main page.

Thanks

All I can really say is thanks - I've been looking for that write-up!

I also plan to swap guages, but I was thingking of swapping only the tach and then doing a set of guage faces...

My modifications include K&N air filter, TB Mod, 89+ Intake manifolds, 86 motor, 6port sleeves removed, RB Headers, Midpipe, HKS catback, and an electric air pump. Not too shabby.

So are you running the stock airpump or an electric one to activate the aux ports and VDI?

You have to do it all. The 89+ tach will not fit into the 86-88 cluster. The mounting screws and electrical connections are different, plus the shape of the face it different.

I am running the electric air pump to run the VDI. I do not have anything related to the 6ports except the holes in the motor.

Thanks. There are a few more misc notes that I will be adding, such as another way of actuating the OMP, improvements in the VDI actuation, and a few other things. So stay tuned.

hey, just a idea about the omp rod.i'm doing this swap myself[project's on hold right now],but i was planning to go down to the local nut+bolt place and get myself some untempered steel rod sections..they have'em in all different sizes.then, run a proper size die on the bottom and top so u can thread a nut on,bend it to ur liking, and heat it up and harden it.might be a lot of trouble, but i was worried about weakening the steel in the stock 1,if i bend it around a bunch..[however,i have not tried].all the same, its a idea of a different way to do it.and, thanks,by the way.good write up.i'm glad to know what i need is the 89+ bac,i was still trying to make mine work[really rather not have had to buy another one ]anyhow.thanks.

Do you have a high flow cat cause the pix are showing a stock airpump that you don't necessarily need at this point.
btw, what kind of epump are you using?

What I ended up doing for the OMP was getting a brake cable from a bike shop. One that has the black protective sleeve around it. The cable has a nut on the end, I ran the cable so the nut was on the bottom of the OMP, up through the actuating hole, then up through the black sleeve, then finally to the TB. There is a screw with a hole in the middle and a nut to clamp down on the cable. Works perfectly, and there is no wear or anthing on the cable, plus, it is flexible so it can run in the tight areas. I will get some pictures of my set up posted.

Well, the picts are not from my car. Another person did the write up and I am hosting them and adding in my thoughts. Right now, my car does not have a cat, just the RB midpipe. The smog pump I am running, needed to activate the VDI, is from a C5 corvetter. I should have a write up on that soon.

After all was said and done, the manifolds were about 150, the 89 emissions rack was 25, and everything else I had. The BAC valve is transferable, so was the TB, I spent about 10 bucks on the cable to actuate the OMP. Then, the dremel tools was about 15 bucks for misc. grinders and stuff. All said and done, about 200 bucks. But I the manifolds could have been found for cheaper.
