Mounts might need to be changed, but it should go in just fine.
Shift **** threads will be different.

I'm not entirely sure regarding the reverse/5th gear/neutral switches.

As long as the S5 trans has the crossmember, you are good to go.

so are we saying that an s4 cross member with the s5 transmission mount is the right combination for an s5 trans in an s4 car? I'm going through the same dilema now.

The crossmember needs to match the transmission, not the car.

No. The crossmember matches the trans, not the car. So if you have an S5 trans then you need a S5 crossmember, and if you have an S4 trans then you need a S4 crossmember.

wrong. the cross member in an s4 is not the same as an s5, but the transmission itself will bolt to either, you just need to swap pout the mounts.

the cross member is what bolts to the body of the car. the s4 cross member only bolts to an s4 body, and an s5 only bolts to an s5 body.

^ I don't think so.

you can however mount an s5 transmission into an s4 car (or vice versa) if you use the same series Y block and crossmember as the transmission (auto's excluded).

i think we're all confused now. I guess I'll find out very soon as I just ordered an s5 y bracket trans mount and i'm going to attempt to bolt it to my s5 trans and see if it will fit with the s4 cross member on my car already. I'll post back soon.

Also I forgot to mention, you'll need to remove the speedo cable from the trans and leave the gear in the transmission. The S5 speedo gear is bigger and won't fit, however if you disconnect it at the cable you can use the speedo gear that's already in the transmission, so make sure you get the speedo gear with the transmission. hope that makes sense.

You MUST use the proper crossmember for the transmission, not the car. Note that the TII and NA ones are different again. I know, I've done it. They all bolt to the car the same way, but where they bolt to the transmission is different, hence you need the crossmember that matches the transmission.

im not at home, or i could walk to the side of my house and tell you.

Ok.
Listen.

I just did the Auto-manual swap on an S4 base model.
As far as NA pieces [I don't have a Turbo car yet so I don't know]

S4 transmission crossmembers will ONLY bolt up to S4 Manual cars.
S5 transmission crossmembers will ONLY bolt up to S4 Automatic cars and S5 Manual and Automatic cars

The Y-bracket that attaches the transmission to the crossmember will only connect S4 manual transmissions to S4 manual transmission crossmembers.

S4 manual transmission crossmembers are like this: --\_/--\
S5 manual and auto transmission and S4 auto transmission crossmembers are like this: --\__/---
[imagine those dashes up at the top of the V shapes]

Stick to the series of your car unless you are doing an Auto-manual transmission swap.

*the S4 automatic mounts are further towards the rear of the car, to connect an S5 manual transmission one must use some method of extending the connections, I used two pieces of angle steel with holes.
Not that it matters but I thought I'd throw it in..

Scroll down to the rear transmission mount section.

Note: The 86-92 Automatic and 89-92 manual Non-turbo crossmembers are the same.
Note: 86-88 manual transmission non-turbo crossmember is different
Note: the 89-92 trans Y-bracket is different from the [not available] 86-88 Y-bracket.

Therefore: you must have the correct series transmission with the matching Y-bracket, crossmember, and car mounts.

The picture they have there is the 86-88 manual non-turbo crossmember.
The 89-92 manual non-turbo and all automatic crossmember is similar but doesn't angle down on the left side, instead it extends straight out and slightly forwards.

Enjoy ^_^

[Note: you can swap the tailshaft between S4 and S5 transmissions and use it that way.. But it'll cost you extra]

[oops.. sorry about the double post - hopefully the extra detail will help? ]

SHEESH you guys really?

i currently have an S4 transmission in my S5 car WITH an S5 transmission cross member, with the stock speedo cable that unmodified, attached happily in there. all the wiring connected right up. the shifter , fit right in.

the cross member is specific to the series of car. the way it mounts to the cross member is different, but you can figure it out. its easy.
