88 vert struts? whats wrong

Ok so I have tokicos all around... dont know what kind just know they are not adjustable and they are black in color... they worked great, damn stiff, however just recently the fronts are making a noise over bumps as if it is bottoming out. Now I push down on the car and it is so stiff I cant push down on it, so I take the wheel off and there is no sign of oil leaking or any leakage at all from the struts, but I did notice that closer to the top of the strut(by the shock tower) there is some big rubber thing that is indeed loose, I am not sure if it is the strut mount, or if my struts are just blown. It handles the same, it doesnt always make the bottoming noise, and if i jerk the wheel from side to side while driving i can here the noise too! please let me know... ive checked my tie rod ends, wheel bearings are fine, and ball joints are fine too.. so let me know what you all think.

rx7vert1988,

Use the search function next time, this has been covered many many times in the past.

The front struts have a dust cover that covers/hides the "mounting block" assembly as shown below. That mounting block has bearings in it which need to be cleaned & re-packed from time to time. You can't actually remove the bearings from the mounting block, so if their rusted or broken up you need to replace the block. Worn/damaged/dry bearings will make the noise you're describing.
