88 Vert. questions

i have a 88' N/A conv. and the oil pressure at idle is between 10-15 and on the 3k rev it only hits 30 ... the haynes said at idle it should be between 15-45 , and 3k should be 45-65 ... also my coolant temp gauge only reads the 2nd line above C ... is either of these connected to a erratic idle, and popping in the exhaust during decel. and when you let off the gas

Oil seems fine. Check it with an actual pressure gage to be certain. I forget what the rx-7's temp gage looks like, but for a S4, it barely comes off the cold mark. Usually 1/4 to 1/3. Anything higher and you have a problem.

Check the TPS setting for erratic idle. What mods do you have? Gutted cat? Usually a free-flowing exhaust will cause popping.

You have a bad e-shaft thermo pellet. TongassT doesn't know what he is talking about if he/she thinks that is fine.

and probably no thermostat

and probably a TPS out of adjustment, that would cause both the idle issues and popping on lift throttle.

Yeah, Icemark is right. I got my numbers all fudged up. Posting on Tylenol PM is not a good idea.

The thermostat regulates the amount of coolant going from the engine to the radiator. If the engine is cold, it is shut. If the engine is hot, it opens. With a missing thermostat, or a stuck open thermostat, you have higher than normal coolant flow from engine to radiator, keeping the coolant temperature lower than normal (I believe this is 160° for the rx-7, but as my previous posts show, I'm crap with numbers).

This temperature is used for ideal running conditions of the engine. Hotter or colder and the engine is not running optimally. The coolant is heating up, so yes, you will have heat, but is not where it should be.
