I did search this, some pilgrim asked the exact same question some time ago but got no replies.
Can it be done? I imagine it would have to go in the trunk, not under the spare wheel cover.

It can go anywhere your little heart desires.In the glove box if you want it to.
If you can run 2 cables and hook up a breaker,the possibilities are endless.

 

Yes. There is a half-moon shaped area at the very back of the car (inside the trunk). I believe it's a leftover from the hardtop's spare tire storage. I found batteries that are long and narrow and that will fit in that space.
