88 TII Oil Leak

I bought an '88 TII. It has a pretty bad oil leak on the back rotor housing gasket that goes between the back rotor housing and the rear iron. To fix this would I only need the gasket in between those two? It has great compression so I didn't really want to completely rebuild it or is there a way to temporarily fix it until I can save for a full rebuild? I was thinking something like jb welb or a really good high temp epoxy?

Can you take a picture of this oil leak? There are no gaskets between irons and housings, only a couple O rings and the coolant seal itself.

Is the leak on teh drivers side or the passengers side? top of the block, near the pan, near the middle?

It's at the top driver's side. Its right near where the oil filter goes on. But between the iron and the housing. Its a pretty bad leak. I can get a pic tomorrow. It's dark right now so its hard to see.

Sounds more like the O-rings for the filter pedestal have gone bad, OR you have a cracked iron. Clean the area with degreaser so you have a clean slate, then drive the car for a bit and check the area again to see where the leak is originating. Those are the two most likely suspects though if its in that area.

It's not the pedestal. You can see it plainly coming out of the iron. I'd say it is a crack or o-ring. It's leaking bad. It probably wouldn't run for 15 minutes before it was completely out of oil. Would jb weld be a temporary fix or make things worse?

Ah, if its leaking that badly then yes, the iron is cracked. JB weld may only be a temporary fix until you put a bit of stress back ont he motor, then itll crack all over again. Find a good condition rear iron for sale and get yourself a soft seal kit, crack it open from the back and replace it. Seems to be the easiest way to fix that without doing a complete rebuild.

I will try the jb weld just until I can get the money. I have an extra iron. Who makes the best soft seal kit for them?

mazda OEM makes the best seal kits, apex seals are another matter entirely but thats besides the point. youll need a minimum of 1 coolant seal, handful of O-rings, rear main seal for the E-shaft, and a new oil pan gasket.

i'm not entirely sure. Ive yet to actually price a rebuild for myself yet, though you can ask a couple vendors what stuff runs. There used to be a couple vendors here I could point you two, but they have since joined another rotary website, both of said vendors being prominent builders that do it on teh cheap.
