'88 GXL differential problem, how major and expensive?

I took my RX-7 in to my mechanic due to grinding as I accelerate while cornering and he narrowed it down to the differential and recommended another shop who does work on them. Has anyone experienced this before and how major was the repair and cost? I hope I'm not being too vague, I'm a noob.

Is this a stock car?
I find this very unlikely on a stock or mildly modified FC.
Do you abuse the car?
Or did all the diff fluid leak out?
I would tend to blame the rear bearings, axles (CV joints), or rear u-joint on the driveshaft in the rear.

I've only owned the car for about 8 months. It has no mods on it and I don't race it or do anything crazy, I like to accelerate fast but that's all. I would have noticed a fluid leak under my car in the garage.

The thing that stumps me is that it only makes the horrible noise when I'm turning and accelerating at the same time. On a straightaway its completely smoothe.

Do you think its going down the wrong route to have someone open up the diff?

Thanks for the help.

Any of the above can cause noise as you have described.
A rear diff service is big money.
Do you trust this shop?
It really sounds like they are trying to ream you.

If you can get under the car, you can quickly inspect all of the components.
Most of it can be easily unbolted and inspected after being disconnected.

I highly doubt it's the rear diff, unless all the diff fluid has been lost or sheer abuse.
