A friend of mines is interested in buying this car, im going to to check it out with him. what do you guys think, is it worth it? he says it needs and air sensor, could that cause it not to run?

if he meant a air temp sensor then it should still run, if its on the stock ecu, the air temp sensor on the piping should fail safe to somewhere around 70F.
If he meant the AFM, then yes, it would cause it to not start and run. Though I suspect something more is causing it to not start. Check to see if the engine is flooded and unflood the engine.
