Unhappy 87 T2 Starts gets hot then dies and wont start

Ok about 2 days ago i was driving to go see a friend and caught in a big rain storm instead of stopping. When the rain finally slowed down the car started actin weird like bogging when i came to street lights wouldnt rev past 4000rpm and the shift light would stay on. As i pulled onto his block the died on me and would not start the rest of the night. The next morning the car starts fine and seems to be ok i dive it for about 15mins then the cars starts to sputter again just like before lots of white smoke come out and dies again i try to start it and it just cranks wont even try to start. I come back the next day starts and drives coolant light is on and buzzer was going off for awhile but car drives fine then the same thing happens again. The car has coolant and has never over heated on me. It seems like it runs cold then soon as it gets to opt. temp its cuts of and wont start for nothing any places i should start checking first. Before this started happening the car ran just fine idk if the rain had somting to do with it but it def started after that.
