I know that they were strengthened in 89+ models. But from what I can tell from my 87 88 and 89 cars is that they look almost the same and the hinge also does look the same.

Yes, you can use them. I know because my right door is an 89, and my left is a 86-87 base model. Just be sure to get the window tracks with the door.

im about to do the same swap on my car. my passenger side was sideswiped... which took out the mirror, front and rear fenders...

luckily i found a 88 base in the bone yard and ganked the front fender and door... im lookin forward to a straight bolt-on swap... after i paint it to match my car of course. hopefully the clips on my fender molding match up to the holes in the S4 fender

BTW, I think the trim holes on the fender are the same.

can you just switch the interior part of the door if they are both manual windows? my 86 base doesnt have speaker mounts/holes,but there is an s5 near here with 5 1/2 speaker mounts in it.

The interior of the door shell isn't interchangable. You'd have to cut the speaker hole and surrounding metal out and weld it into the replacement door. Once again, make sure you have the window tracks because the mounting holes differ.
