87 RX-7 Turbo has been sitting 3 years...
A co-worker of mine has a 1987 RX-7 Turbo II that's been in storage for 3 years. It has 66K miles on it. It has not been started in that time. Can these engines be ruined by sitting that long? Would this engine require a complete rebuild or is it more better to just get a new engine? How much would a rebuild cost? Can anyone recommend an RX-7 mechanic in South Florida. The cars interior is good and exterior just needs paint. He's willing to sell it to me for $500. I'm figuring if I can buy the car, have the engine rebuilt and the car painted for about $3500. this would be acceptable. If the engine doesn't require the cost of a major rebuild than its an outstanding deal.
Thanks,
Renny

You better buy that car for only 500 bucks! BNR Supercars can hook you up with a nice rebuild and you'll be on your way. That's assuming it even needs a rebuild!

Whoa talk about a sweet deal. I wish i could run accross a deal like that, i would ****, beg my friends to let me borrow the money. Anyway cheapest place i have found for rebuilds is here http://hypntyz.rx7life.com/rebuildpage.htm But i doubt you will need it with that low mileage, as reccomended above just replace all fluids, and go from there.

Opinions are like........
Tell the coworker that storage most likely damaged the engine/transmission. Explain how everything is rusting and all the seals are now shot and other BS! Give him $250 for it
$500 is a steal---engine blown or not.
Tow the car home so that coworker doesn't know that there is nothing wrong with it.
All fluids equals gas also. Find out why the person put it in storage to begin with. Engine might have been destroyed before storage. If it wasn't broken before storage, it should be OK now.
Remove plugs and make sure engine turns over smoothly. Use ratchet on one of the accesories to turn engine over. Squirt some(couple drops) ATF/MMO into engine for first-start lubrication.
Before starting: lubricate all mechanicals, t-body cable, gas/brake/clutch pedals, change oil/filter, fuel filter, battery, drain/clean gas tank and refill, replace plugs, drain/refill radiator, bleed brakes and clutch, check all hoses/belts, change air filter(no mice residing in intake condo).......
If engine starts and sounds good. Change transmission and rearend oil. Change thermostat/cap. Replace hoses/belts/tires for peace of mind. Paint car and ENJOY!

Must...scrub...parts...
BEFORE you start it replace the cats. florida is humid as hell and the cats are probably full of water that will expand when heated by exhaust and cause them to collapse. trust me, i know from personal experience...
