'87 N/Turbo Tranny Problems
Hey you Mazda Guru's!
Well I just bought myself my first RX-7, couldnt pass it up for 400 dollars! Of course its got a few problems that need delt with at this price, but all and all it was a good deal, I was able to throw a battery in it and drive it to work for a couple weeks, hour and a half drive each way. Early on I noticed from my experience with cars, what sounded to be throughout bearing noise coming from the tranny, seemed to go away when I engaged the clutch. Then one day while getting on the freeway, normal driving speed on onramp, I went to shift into 5th, and nothing! Motor just revved up. Luckily I was only a few exits from my house. I also noticed when I got off the freeway and starting using the lower gears, that 1 thru 3rd gear were making a bad bearing noise in each gear, but 4th was absolutely fine. I have the tranny pulled and inspected the fluid and bottom of pan, lots of shavings in fluid, and even a couple chunks of larger pieces of metal. I have found a working tranny in a local junkyard for 175 dollars. I also have found a rebuild kit online for my tranny for 125 dollars but this does not include a synchro kit. The synchro kit is an additional 235 dollars. I guess my main question is, do I need the synchro kit, and what do you think is the better fix, the used tranny or rebuilding mine.
