Question 87 GTU Need to make offer

Hey guys,
I found a rex near me that I want to get. It is an 87 GTU 5-speed with 122K on it. The man say's it is his daughters and he wants to get rid of it because it has been sitting for over 2 years. I hopped in and with jumpers it started right up, with zero smoke! It's tranny will not go into 1st, 3rd, or 5th (the "forward gears) It went fine in 2nd 4th and reverse though. the paint is shot and the interior is missing a few pieces of trim at the hatch and the carpet is filthy. He said make an offer. I think 800, does that sound about right considering it prolly needs a tranny? What would you pay?

Try even lower, if its been a lawn ornament for so long, he probably just wants it off his property. Try $500.

Talking Not a bad offer but...

If you can get it for cheaper do it! I would but $800 is not bad consider that the body and the frame is still in good shape? What about under the hood? Clean?

Re: 87 GTU Need to make offer

First of all, there was no GTU in 87. Now the question is what model is it really?

Big question - are the tires rotted out or worn? That's $400 right there.

For the rest of the car:
$1750 Blue Book on 122K Mi 87 NA in Good Condition.
-$450 Rebuilt Transmission
-$800 Paint Job
=$500 Offer for Car

How is starting without smoke disturbing, it's normal where I come from. And about being a GTU, perhaps it has 2 fenders off a GTU because that's what it says. Why not help me figure out what it REALLY is..power windows and locks, 5-lug wheels, the low spoiler like on my 90GXL What do you thik it is?

Anything with pwoer windows is either a convertible, turbo, or GXL. Pretty easy to tell which of the 3

Sounds like a $300-600 car to me. You have a feel for the owner and the car more than we do, so go with your gut. Whatever it's worth to you...

Look at the build date in the doorpanel to find out what year it is...an 87 car will be built in late 86 or early 87, and an 88 will be built in late 87 or early 88.

actually I was all confused about some stuff... it has manual windows and locks, and a power sunroof, and the small spoiler and power steering. Built 07-87. And yes it did have the normal rotary smoke when I started it, but because that is normal rotary behavior, I consider it to be a non-smoker.

Well given that info it probably is an 88 GTU. Some of them had sunroofs.

Oh, OK.

It could be an 88 GTU. Does it have color-keyed aeroflow electric mirrors and twill upholstery like an 88 TII?

Sounds like an 88 GTU then, which is one of the better FC models made in my opinion. Too bad it has a sunroof. Does it have an aluminum hood? Blue Book is about $2,200 in good contition, and just subtract all the repairs from this number like I did in my first post. Remember, tires are a biggie! Also note that the front wheel bearings are about $500 each to replace ala Mazda, or $50 each + lots of work ala the Mazdatrix method.

BTW, Aaron's site has good info on buying a car:
