'87 FC engine removal and dissassembly

'87 FC engine removal and dissassembly

Well, we have been trolling around these forums for a little while now getting info about removing rotary engines. We bought this car for $400 and the previous owner said the coolant seals must have been broken since it puffed white smoke badly.

We got worried it was going to be rusty and wanted to get it out of the car ASAP, event though we could not get it to fire whatsoever. We determined it had no spark, but do not know the cause of that.

Anyway, once we got it out of the car and dissassembled - the coolant seals were indeed broken and it unfortunately had some scoring on each housing. From here we do not know what to do, so I am asking your opinions.
We can:
-get a junkyard engine for cheap and not know really what we are getting again
-rebuild this engine ourselves
-send it to Rotary Resurrection and get the housings replaced along with other things

From what we have read so far, I am assuming we cannot use these rotors anymore since they are a bit scored...is that true?

BTW - this engine is going into a beater track car and will not need to be road legal or run perfectly.

It looks like it blew an apex seal, were all of the apex seals intact when you took it apart? If they were intact whoever rebuilt it last half assed it.

Those housings are dead, but technically you could use the rotor assuming the apex seal groove is still in good shape. But if you have a choice, get another rotor.

yes, the apex seals were broken on the rear rotor. Are there any difficulties with using foreign parts from a different engine and puting them into this one?

Sounds good - so I could use a rotor with that kind of scoring? I really dont care about this engine running very well, as said it is a track car that will only be running for a minute at a time for a drift pass.

So inventory includes a housing with a score on the center - unusable - a housing with a score on the edge - unusuable - a rotor with no scoring - usuable - and a rotor with a score on the center - possibly usuable.

Did I get that all right?

that rotor is usable if the apex seal groove is still in tolerance. i would take a fine file and clean that up though.
