Angry 87* Trans OVERHEATING

I just got an 87 NA
Its a great car beautiful condition great suspension and it seems to run well.

What are a few things i should do for a daily driver, and occationally driving it hard?

The transmission has some problems
the shifter is loose but it seems to shift fine and pull into gear well but it grinds or klunks into reverse?

I live in Chandler AZ and the Engine gets so DAMN HOTT!
It makes like a bubbling noise and is always about to overheat.
What are some cheaper solutions to help cool it down or is there something wrong with it?

If you know anyone around the Chandler or Tuson area that could help me out with my trans Let me know!

Your help is much appriciated!!!

Thanks.

the tranny isnt the problem... ur shifter bushings are.. if the shifter is sloppy then its ur shifter bushing they're shot..easy and cheap replacement tho.. as far ur engine gettin hot.. i live in florida.. and it gets pretty hot... i dont know what to tell u... maybe get a bigger radiator.. a fluidyne but im not sure if other forum members would recommend it as well.. i think ryde or die has one.. ask him.. ask him if it works ..

Switch to a more efficient coolant. Try www.evanscooling.com

There's something wrong with the cooling system. At the very least, I would begin by flushing the system and changing your thermostat and rad cap. Also check belt tension on the water pump. Make sure you use an acurate mix of coolant & h2o when you refill. In AZ, I would reccomend 70% distilled water, 30% coolant.

Also, do NOT USE the orange long life coolant. It may cause premature engine failure, and in my opinion is not worth the risk. (Ask me how I know 2 engine's later...)

Also check your water pump for leaks as well as your fan clutch for proper operation.

Banzai's sugggestion of Evans coolant is a good one (I use it as well) but I would first find out what's wrong with your stock system. No point spending 25 bucks a gallon on coolant if your waterpump explodes 2 days later.

Also, before you shift into reverse, try putting it in second first. It will help prevent grinding.

Thank you

If my bushings are shot would it be grinding

I read before that the busings would probably need to be replaced in older or high mile rx-7s so i figured thats why it was loose. but does that cause grinding?

Can i get the parts at a local auto store?

Same with the Thermostat. and how hard is that to replace?

Thanks

buy a Mazda thermostat... It's shockingly easy to replace... (just get a Haynes manual, or the factory shop manual...) ....And be sure to get a new rad cap while your at it! (my cooling system went pop because of this...)
