86 na fuel pump
There's a fuel pump switch inside the airflow meter. When cranking, the engine draws in air. The AFM opens slightly, activating the fuel pump switch. Unless the AFM is open, the fuel pump will remain off even with the key on.
Yes, the above is how the pump stays on while the engine is running.
But when starting (cranking), IIRC, the circuit opening relay gets a start signal and turns on the fuel pump, not the switch inside the AFM.
OP, if you want to check operation of the fuel pump, turn ign. on (warning lights on, engine not running), and jumper the yellow fuel pump check connector in the harness near the AFM (two female pin open ended plug sometimes covered with a black rubber boot).
