86 n/a 900$obo

Hello, there is a 86 Gxl in the paper and i call the guy about the add cause it said needs some work. So i talk to him and he told me he had it sitting for about a 1 year or so at his shop wanting to fix it but no time. Its on the second engine he told me and its a auto right now but when he got the engine he got it as a package with the 5spd tranny with all the parts and drive shaft. So how long would that take to change??? Also he said that it is running only on 3 plugs?!? He said he changed plug and wires and alt. He said he starts it up every so often and he also said that ity had alot of power when this problem started because he knew what the blown engine felt like! For the body its got some dents one on the fender and one on the back. the guy said it is in good condition. So what do you guys think the problem is and is it worth the money. I am talking in Canadian money. Thx
James

Hmm... he says it is running on only three plugs. That sounds a little weird. Perhaps there is a bad connection in one of the coils causing the plug not to receive spark.

As for the 5-speed swap it should not take too long if you have someone to help you out. Depending on how mechanically inclined you are, you could do it in a day.

I would think it is definately worth the money. I think $900 CDN equates to what... about $700 or so American dollars. You could make that much back just by parting it out. If that is not what you want to do, it would definately make a good daily driver if you take car of it and fix that 'running on three plugs' problem.

yeah thats what i was think maybe just a coil! Well i think it is worth the money just for the tranny brand new still in the rapping. I think i am going to c if wpgrexx will check it out with me. Do you think there could be any other reason for the car only running on the 3 plugs? Also i can do my ownbody work(use to work in a body shop) Getting a safety not a problem at all. I think it maybe a good buy if it is as good as the guy says.

Why would he change the alternator for a spark firing problem? At least you know there is a new one on there. Is he using a timing light to see which plug isn't firing? If its a trailing plug, then I believe that there is something in the coil/ignitor assembly that alternates which plug it fires. Can't remember and I'm at work and I don't have my book or FSM here. There is a check for the coils and ignitors in the FSM. All you need is a digital multimeter. I would buy it if the body is in decent shape. The spark problem shouldn't be that hard to fix.
