86 GXL have a Limited Slip Diff?

As the subject states, does the 86 GXL have an LSD? If so, what are the chances that it still works well as an LSD? Is there an average life-span in miles for them?

Yes, it does have an LSD and it should still work if it hasn't been abused. The 86 GXL did NOT use the viscous type unit that the later cars use which wear out more quickly. If you have the car, test it out.

IIRC clutch type LSD's are the ones that wear out faster. I think viscuss ones are just shittier about how they lockup.

The 86 GXL used a clutch type?

Is it possible for a Viscous type to wear out?

Hmmm, I always thought the viscous types wore out fastest AND locked up poorly/slowly in comparison to clutch types.

OK heres the scoop... The 86-88's have a clutch type lsd, that normally last for a long time 150k - 200k These are the ones that lock up hard and fast and give the actual limited slip feeling. The 89-91 have the viscous type (not sure on life span) but frankly they suck... alot more driver friendly, but almost useless as a limited slip. Its a very commen thing to swap a s5 lsd for the clutch type s4, thats what im doing anyway.

In my s5, I only get one tire fire... and iv had since 68,000 miles.. so its not just warn out.

viscous uses oil to do a shitty job of locking up, they dont wear out. the clutch types will wear out, but are easy rebuildable, also bullet proof and lock up a lot better.

They most certainly do wear out...the question is which one wears first. Over time that fluid loses it's consistency and the slow locking LSD becomes worse or not locking at all if the goo inside is old/nasty enough.

it's not the clutch that wears out

it is the oil that wears out

if you change the oil its fine again, if the clutches die in an s4 you replace the clutches. Either will wear out but either is renewable/rebuildable

No, the 89+ GXL did not come with a LSD.

The only 89-91 FCs that came with a LSD were the Turbos and the GTUs model (but not the GTU)

This whole thread has been covered countless times, and the information asked is in the sticky at the top of the page about what options and standard features were available.

The starter of this thread should have read that, and if still had any questions, then searched.
