NC 86 GXL feels slow

I'm not quite sure how to describe this but I've had my 86 rx7 for a few months. I enjoy driving it but it feels so slow. I think it's a combination of it being underpowered and super heavy. I've done plugs, intake gaskets + vacuum lines and the basics. I bought it from someone who took good care of it so it's up to par.

I'm selling the car soon since a guy here locally is interested and seems persistant.

I've done some research and I have to admit i LOVE the body's curves of the FC. I LOVE the interior styling of the FC. It's super comfortable. It fits me perfectly and it handles so good. I love making u-turns around gas pumps and u-turns in the middle of the road. All in all it's just what I want in a car. I cant imagine owning a non-rotary engine. My itch is far from scratched. My biggest turn off atm is the lack of power. My daily is a sentra and it'll run circles around this car. I can take off and before I know it im doing 60. In the same amount of time i'm trying to get some RPMs and shift into 2nd on my RX.

Is this just the nature of the N/A or maybe a difference between S4 and S5 models? I've thought about buying a TII after I sell the one i've got. If i dont sell it swapping it to TII. Any Ideas?

You could try wiring the 5/6 ports open and see if there is a noticable difference

It's the heaviest NA coupe of the whole FC line-up, it will always feel slow.

Unless you have some good cash to throw at the car, keep it NA. I'm waiting to go turbo for the simple fact I want to do it once and do it right. And right now, I ain't gots the money. HOWEVER, I loved my GXL. Yes it was the slowest NA FC I've owned, but it was really nice and people were surprised At the luxuries it had for being an '88

"N/A"

Well there's your problem.

I also own an N/A FC, although an S5 which has 14 more horsepower. I know, it's way more. I feel like an idiot driving this loud, but good looking car in traffic when I could barely keep up with moms in their vans. Buying a T2 is difficult because most are high mileage and the bodies are getting old. If the one you have now is in good condition, then you're better off doing a turbo swap.

wiring them open will hinder acceleration.

My 5/6 arent stuck. I checked them like fc3spro.com said and theyre working fine. I also cleaned the crap out of em when i had the lower intake off doing gaskets. I guess its just a characteristic of the car. I thought about doing TII tho. It has the same hp as my sentra but 500 more lbs of dead weight. So the trick is would it be worth doing? And what kind of gains could i expect from a street port tII with the top mount intercooler or vs the front mount?

On subject of luxuries. Im also impressed at the gxl's comforts. Thats kinda the downfall of having a t2 id lose those

Sounds like you need to do some more research...

That would be my vote: compression test.

The NA's were never fast, not in a straight line anyway. You need to get that thing around some twistys or on a track to really have fun with it. Even if you've got 120 compression on all 6 faces, you are going to get hosed by a 98 civic in a straight line. That's just how it is... Now a turbo, there's the rub. Talk about speed, talk about blown apex seals...

Why swap when you can just buy. You can buy someones dream project for 4k and under, Ive done it 3 times and its insane the ammount of sweet bits that come with these deals.

By "dream project" I mean somones dream TII that they never finish. They had good intentions but just failed to make any headway. Thes fire sales are constantly happening in this community, hell just have a look at the FS. They start out asking 8k and end up selling a TII and two truckloads of **** for 2k. If you have a car that runs and drives why not keep it that way then in the end you will have an NA and A TII.

Ive had quite a few NAs. Every one has been slower than my MKII VW Golf . I can do a swap in my sleep but I never would, just too much of a hastle.

Our cars are priced so low I cant bealive anyone does swaps.

I have an 88 gxl. When it works its Fast. Make sure its running right. do a Dino run. Take the cat out. If its an Auto like mine was it was a Nightmare, So if its a 5speed its not bad

out of boost, yes. laggier than naturally aspirated, in boost, no comparison. factory turbo is a bit more responsive in the 3200-4k range however but tends to fall flat at about 6k.

Makes sense. Lower comp engine. Now this is doable on piston engines but what about building a s5 na with the higher compression rotors and turbo that. A guy i know has done it but i havent read about it

I don't recommend building a turbo off the s5 NA rotors. Best to use the s4 turbo rotors. More material so they're stronger. Yes a little heavier, but whatever, just can't rev as high. Send the turbo out to BNR and have him rebuild it to suit your needs. Then get a good front mount and fuel/ECU system. That will give you the best results
