86 GXL with clutch problem..

I just bought a 86 GXL with 114000 miles (original engine) to use as a weekend toy. The car itself is in great condition, the previous owner took good care of it. Interior like brand new, body panels good with no rust etc. I am going to make it into a dedicated autocrosser over the winter and eventually do a swap to a turbo drivetrain. Anyway, the car drives well, but every so often the clutch pedal sticks to the floor and will not come back up so I have to reach down and pull it up with my hand and then it's fine again for a while. Also, it won't shift/come out of gear when the pedal is stuck down. Like I said I am going to go through it over the winter but in the mean time I would like to fix this problem if I could. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Have you read the FSM or do you have a Haynes manual? They describe this symptom.

I am not an expert (you will see my own clutch question i posted today

There are links to a PDF version of the FSM in the FAQ sticky at the top of the board. I think you will find a good answer there...

I assume you checked you clutch fluid right? It is the cylindrical resoviour (sp) on the drivers side. That coudl be the simple answer, but it maybe be that you need to replace the clutch...which I will be doing soon.

Yep, fluid is fine and the previous owner, who by the way was the original owner claims he just replaced the clutch last year. I do have the FSM but couldn't find that particular symptom but I will look again. Thanks for the advice.

Sounds like a hydraulics problem.

When the clutch is fully depressed and not engaging the clutch and not popping back up then I would assume your hydraulics aren't functioning properly. If it happens often enough for you to test it, push the clutch pedal until that happens and have someone watch the slave cylinder to see if it's working.
