Did all 86 gxl's have aluminum hoods to beat the weight requriments (goverment gas guzzler tax in 86)??? Thanks Dave

 

No.
I think only a small # of 86 cars had aluminium hoods. Mine does not.

Ummm... my 86 Sport came with a steel hood. I think the only NA's that definitely had aluminum hoods are 'verts and GTUs'

 

Ummm, ok. My friend's base model is an 86 and has an aluminum hood. But our parts car 86 GXL has a heavy *** steel hood. What gives?

 

I don't know about the states, but in Canada they had a GX model,(I've owned two) and I think they all had aluminum hoods, mine did anyways and they were both 5 speeds. I've heard that you could order it as an option and that it also included an aluminum jack and spare. I'm not sure if that's true though

 

SPort model has aluminum hood, looka t the sales brochure, maybe your car was wrecked and they put aftermarket part on it? Or Mazda just fucked up?

The sport never came with an aluminum hood. I owned an 87 sport (6/86 production date) that I bought new and it didn't come with it and all the sales info I have, says the sport didn't come with it.

 

My '86 base model had an aluminum hood, If I had know this would happen, I would have swapped it for the steel hood on my '90 GXL parts car.





How much does a straight aluminum hood cost these days? What's a carbon fiber or fiberglass hood cost?

I have never came across an AL. N/A hood, or a steel TII hood.

 

Let me clear this hood thing up once and for all.

1. NAs randomly had steel or aluminium hoods, with early FCs (86 and 87) being more prone to getting the AL hood due to EPA mileage regulations (Mazda trying to save weight).

2. All convertables had AL hoods

3. TIIs had either steel or AL, and it was random.

4. The GTUs came with an AL hood.
