Pretty distinct whining in all gears except fourth. Swear to god, it sounds like i have a dogbox. No grinding or other problems except for the rare reverse grind.

I almost like the whining though. It gets REALLY loud when the revs go up high, so taking off in first gear, my car is probably the most distinct sounding in the whole city; loud whine from the tranny, the putt-putt from my holey exhaust, and a loud hiss from the holey exhaust too, and of course the engine itslef screaming. I should record it and post it up to see if anyone elses car sounds like mine.

Im on 2nd tranny, probably going to go onto my 3rd NA tranny.

1st one had the 'rocks in the box' sound as well as the whining. That tranny puked all gears except 4th on the highway.

2nd tranny has the whining sound, some of the bad input bearing sound, and grinds 2nd and 3rd at high rpms. Can't downshift at high rpm unless I rev match perfectly. I usually just shift from 2nd to 4th when driving to avoid grinding 3rd.

NA transmissions suck.

I've had the low whurring in neutral with clutch pedal depressed since I got my 88 vert last year, 106,000 miles. Been told its the throwout bearing and should get louder as it goes but others have told me new clutch and throughout bearing did not eliminate noise.

I have the whinning isue when it is idling. Sometimes, very rarely, but sometimes will grind when it is going into third, and reverse. Also when I first got the car it would grind and not want to go into first, but this was only when I was at a dead stop. I just usually double clutch it or shift into second first.

I sometimes get the whirring noise when the clutch is out, but usually only when the car is cold, once it warms up it seems to go away. Also It will grind on the 1-2 shift at high rpms if I shift very fast, but I assume this is normal...

88 AE TII>> Got the car at 45,000Km's and noticed blocky shift
from 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 2nd. Had the
Transmission rebuilt. New Syncros and Bearings.
Face Ground Flywheel and new Clutch. It was improved
but the only way to get it into 2nd from 3rd is to tap the
brake while letting it fall into gear. If you force the issue
it lets you know with some unpleasant noise.
The best improvement came when I changed to Red Line
Tranny fluid. It is still reluctant to go into 2nd smoothly.
Up or down. I have learned to live with it as I love my 7
and will tolerate a little misbehaviour once in a while.
LOL

I got the whirring noise when it was cold. If I rev to 1500 and try to put in 1st, it would grind to **** and not go in. Shifting fast to 2nd always yielded a grind or it just wouldnt go in, say with 3rd but not as bad. 4th gear and 5th were fine. Always liked to grind when going into reverse too, but if I went into 4th before reverse, it was fine. Pieces of ****!

Hehe... resurrected threads are awesome. Have to add my input, I guess. Low whirring noise in neutral and difficulty getting into second gear.

Heh, I did not dig it from anywhere. Someone else found it, voted on the poll, thus bringing it back to the top.

I have had the whirring problem and synchro problems on my SECOND n/a rebuilt transmission. It's never rattled, but it is the worst transmission i've ever had in a car.

I really think drifting and good Auto-X require a transmission with smooth crisp shifting. Nissan transmissions have always made me insanely jealous that I don't have on in my car.

I ran neosynth for awhile and it was the best stuff i've ever used. it almost fixed EVERY problem i had with my transmission. However last time i swapped clutch plates i ended up taking a shower in it. So, Now i'm running amsoil.... no where near as nice.

91 NA - A short story... I was getting used to my 91na 127000mi – shifting from 5th to 3rd at 70mph without going through 4th. It worked fine, but as I slowed down to about 50, I downshifted to 4th, and BANG SCREEEEETCH, the wheels locked up. I popped it out of 4th >BOOM< and limped home in 5th. I had that sinking feeling – this is going to be expen$ive. I pulled the tranny in the driveway, took it apart, and found the lock nut on the main shaft had come loose, backed up & jammed 5th so tight I had to chisel the thrust collar off. It cost me $60 for the parts (2 lock nuts, thrust collar & retaining rings). I took a chance the bearings were OK.

The lock tab on the rear mainshaft nut was cracked by the factory assembly line.
It was staked with a square (instead of round nose) ended punch.
The tab cracked & fell out.

It ran hard for 2 years with synthetic oil, before a tooth broke on the input gear.

Used to have a nasty grind shifting from first into second.

it would grind at anything above 1700rpms.. and at 4k it wouldnt even let me in.

i changed tranny fluid to redline mt90 and the problem went away.

i have the bearing noise too... and the slight 3rd gear grind. i have replaced bushings and the oil and it hasn't gone away...

also, the tranny doesn't downshift into first because you're not suppose to! only when you're at a dead stop or rolling at a few MPH.

Hard to get into gears, especially 1st and 2nd at a stop. Same whirring noise as everyone else. Also grinds the 1-2 on a medium to hard accel... I have to double clutch it on the upshift under heavy load to keep it from grinding. I also pretty much have to double clutch it on ALL the downshifts if I want it to go into gear at all.

My car's 216,000 on it, and the tranny works pretty well. Its hard to get into reverse when its cold, and I have to match revs when going into first if im moving, but I think the first gear thing might be a safety issue. I know it was on a few of my other cars. As for sounds, I have no idea. I can barely hear myself think, let alone hear transmission whirs.

I've only had Baby for about a week now but I can say the tranny itself doesn't seem to have too many probelms but it does have it's idosyncrocies. For instance the shifter is whacked it's more worn out than anything I have ever seen. When shifting fast it does take an extra yank to get it into gear. It does have that neutral Idle whine, I thought it was the throwout bearing. And so far the only other problem is sometimes it will shift into 2nd instead of 4th, but that might be me.

Oh and Baby has 212,000 miles on her and has recived great maintence but doesn't appear to have been repaired often. The suspetion is shot.

My T2 tranny only had about 85k on it and it ground every gear when "racing". when the motor blew, i figured i'd go ahead and have the tranny gone through. no grinding when racing now. the only time it grinds is when i forget i have a performance clutch(have to push the dang thing in all the way to disengage).

I have the whirring too, but goes away when tranny warms up. only hear it in the morning.
