5 lug question problems

ok i just finally finished up dooing the fronts and have everything ready to roll i take a quick spin around my court and find out my alignment is totally out of wack so bad i couldnt make it back up my driveway. So i let it sit for the night and came to it this morning working on it. I figured the alignment is controlled by the rod sticking out right befor the control arm(if looking from the front of the car) and so i adjusted that and the only way to make my wheel straight(the steering wheel was in the "lock" position) was to unscrew it till it was off so i sat there thinking how am i going to fix it and i finally just put it on enough for it to hold then tightened up the 17m bolt all the way i could. Is this bad for the car or is it something im going to have to live with or do i need another part off the 5 lug car?

Use a tape measure: Take a measurement from center of front tire treads. Measure the distance from tire to tire on the front and back of the front tires. Adjust so they are relatively close +/- 1/4". Leave the steering wheel where it is, that's center. The steering wheel has nothing to do with alignment. When you have the car aligned, they will adjust the steering wheel by turning each tie rod end the same way and that will make the steering wheel "level". You could do this youself, but time comsuming and you need an alignment anyway.
