26 mpg on the highway!
Yep... that's right... 26 mpg on the highway! What the HELL was I doing right?? I drove three and a half hours to Norfolk from Raleigh, and the return trip, and got 26 mpg both ways!! Yes, it's an NA. I SOOO don't drive like a girl, either... lol *(even though I happen to be one)
Now here's the other dilemma. I only knew that because I filled up after each direction of the trip. When I fill my gas tank up, the needle on the gauge goes to Full, but then about halfway through the tank, it drops to Empty. Very few of my dash idiot lights come on for the things they should... so I am not sure it's related. I usually just stick to using the counter gauge and at about 200 miles, I fill up.
Any suggestions on how to fix this problem, please let me know!
Thanks!!

cool.
hey I get fuel economy that high, even driving around town... dont ask me how I do it, you dont wanna hear it... unless you like V8 swaps
the fuel level sending unit is very simple, you can diagnose the mechanical aspect of it very easily by pulling it out of the gas tank for a looksee.

You have a bad sending unit. Mine's been like that for years- goes to full, then at about 1/2 tank drops to zero. I just reset the trip odometer every fillup, same as you...
90% of my mileage is highway, and even as crazy as I (and you?) drive, I still get 26+ mpg.... 26.787 last fillup, matter of fact

Highway mileage in the mid 20's is fairly common. The FD is capable of a VERY wide range of mileage figures depending on how you drive it. My car seems to follow an approximate 5mpg incriment rule:
25mpg - relaxed freeway driving
20mpg - aggressive freeway driving
15mpg - city
10mpg - madman city driving
5mpg - racing at the track

I get about 31 freeway driving (I'm not a friendly freeway cruiser...) @ about 80mph (4k rpm in the damn GTUs0, around 22-24 for most of my 'city' driving which is usually around 45-50ish. Some cars just like us!

The only times I've ever gotten around 26 mpg in my 90 GTU is when I'm crossing eastern washington, just one long straight shot along i90, hell I even managed to get 25 with the AC on.
