2 verts only keeping 1-what to do?
I have to sell 1 of 2 verts: 89 red or 90 black. My red with TII swap needs a rebuild. I could rebuild and swap the turbo drivetrain into the black vert and the N/A from the black vert into red.
Along with the engine I'd have to swap diff, exhaust, fuel pump, spring, shocks, struts, stereo amps, wiring, speakers, power and ground cables, security system....then just small stuff, alarm door actuators, N/A cruise control.
My motivation for this is simple...I've wanted a black vert since my last one was totaled. I ended up with a red vert because it was the best vert within driving distance..but man do black verts look the best IMHO.
I'm guessing that the red vert is worth about $1k less than the black. Both cars need new tops, but the red needs it more quickly. Red is a southern car with not a spot of rust or corrosion. While the black is a northern car, but was garaged all it's daily driven life. The black vert does have rust on the front of both rear wheel wells.
Hell here's a list...and a pic to keep your interests!!!

89 red vert:
Positives
1. Drivetrain is already in it
2. it's a southern car (Cali and Atlanta) with not a spot of rust or corrosion
Negatives:
1. It needs a new top badly
2. It needs paint for the TII hood and skirts to match
3. Generally has dents, dings and paint flaws that need attention
90 black vert
Positives:
1. it's black already
2. hardly a dent or ding on it and garage kept all it's life
3. my father owned it since 92 and kept meticulous care of it
4. repainted about 10 yrs ago
Negatives:
1. it needs a new top
2. it has rust in front of each rear wheel well
3. big truck backed into it hard while parked. Bumper was salvaged instead of replaced and the repaint on it has cracked and splintered..it needs replaced.
4. father backed into car rear bumper is scuffed and has cracked paint.
5. turbo drivetrain and other goodies are not already in it.
I've got TII hood, MS scoop and TII skirts that all need paint regardless of whether it's red or black. The skirts would cover the rust I'd cut away from the black vert. A friend and I will be doing the paint so getting some red on his N/A hood won't be a problem....though colormatching the reds will be an issue.
Aside from the time and sweat in swapping I'm guessing I'll be out about $1k.
I'm not so much looking for an answer, but opinions are always nice. Hopefully the list I just made will help me size things up also.

The rust is very small and manageable
I can cut it off, paint it as-is so it doesn't rust more and then cover with my side skirts. But being a northern car rust could start to show other places...not that it has any indications it will. There is no bubbling paint anywhere or anything like that.

thats what we are saying... rust is a muthafucker... you will start seeing your paint bubble... and its just an ******* of a job i hate rust so much .. if you want to learn to weld and stuff and do body work i say keep both of them. repair the car till its 1000 percent pristine and keep it and sell the red one that you kept just to drive around and stuff. if you wanna sell the black one...err never mind i dont even want to know the shipping on a car from Indiana to pa

If I keep the red vert then I'll either paint the hood, scoop and skirts as close to matching as I can or put a fresh coat of red on the whole car and not worry that the engine bay and such doesn't match perfect.

But I'm not so worried about rust. The car has been absurdly cared for. When I was in grade school he insulated the garage so it could be heated and cars could be washed in winter time. Then it became a 3 season car and stopped being driven in wintertime. It sat garaged and safe.
