1st gear problem

i'm a new member sorry my first post had to be a problem but
i just test drove an 86 gxl, yesterday it was fine in the parking lot, i changed gears and all... today right when i got it into 1st, it got stuck- the shifter would NOT leave the 1st position... does anyone know what could have went wrong and how serious a problem it is? the car's a great price and aside from me or the dealer being able to get it out of 1st gear position (the physical SHIFTER will NOT move no matter how hard you pull it) it's fine.. any fixes or things i could do about this would be appreciated, it's the only thing i could find wrong.
thanks

Looks like it's time to go find another car...

It could be as simple as a pilot bearing failure or as extreme as a failed transmission.

I would stay away from the car regardless - I hate auto dealers.

baboon7,

Ask someone in the canada forum or their website if they have one for sale. I've seen allot of posts from Canada lately.
