1st gear issues

Hi, I have an 88 n/a...
After driving the car for a little while I've noticed that sometimes, usually after just being started, my first gear messes up. What I mean by this is that after normally putting it into first and letting out the clutch the shifter goes into no-mans-land somewhere around the area that reverse would be if you were in a bmw or vw. The challenge is getting it out of this position...you really have to play with it in order to free it into the next gear and I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this at all??????
thanx
