1991 took a dump this morning... how?

*RE-POST FROM WRONG LIST*

just got the 1991 N/A RX7 vert a month and a half ago, 144,xxx... check engine light pops on and off... seller said it needed new injectors... i took it to three different mechanics and each of them said it just needed a tune up... 450 damn dollors

car would have a hard time starting i would have to pump the gas... and after back firing once or twice it would kick over and start, once i get it going it will sputter and choke if i get on the gas to hard... but if i ease on the gas it will slowly speed up at higher rpm's, if im on the freeway in 5th it will have no out put, it will just hold steady the speed i was at in 4th, and if i step on the gas to speed up it will jerk a little and give me a "clickady" sound... and the "ADD Coolant" light keeps coming on every now and again... i went and bought a gallon of coolant, popped the cap to put some in, but it was full already... i even checked the reserve and it was full as well... no leaks or anything

a week ago i change the spark plugs and it started right up with no pumping of the gas and had no problem accelerating for the rest of the day... but the next morning, i hoped in it, tried to start it up and the same old stuff started happening again ...

3 days ago i tried changing the spark plug wires, but there was no difference from the stock ones

morning after, i hoped in it to go to work and fought with it like i do every morning, but it just tuned over and back fires... but wouldn't start.
same day, after a long day on the bus, i got back home and tried to start it just for kicks... and i got it to start ...

this morning i went to Aamco to get the codes ran... but they told me that no codes where coming up, and to go to Mazda and have them look at it...

sound like anything anyone has come across??? im trying not to write mazda's off as junk, its my first RX7 and im already wanting to get rid of it

Since it started well after you did the plugs that tells me they fouled up quickly so you probably are running rich or burning oil/coolant. Im leaning towards running rich and bad injectors could be a good cause. You can either by new oem injectors for about $200 or you can have yours rebuilt for under $100 and have basically new ones.

You need a rotary professional, stat. The Dealers dont know squat about your car so forget them entirely.

Anybody that tries to sell you a $750 MAP sensor is definately out to f**k with you.

Even Mazdatrix doesn't charge that much for a new one (they charge ~$330). An N/A S5 MAP/Boost/Pressure sensor comes up fairly often on the For Sale section on this forum.

What justification did they make to say that you needed a new one? They rarely go bad from what I understand. Did they pull engine codes? Did they test it manually via the FSM? You can.

You bought an old car. It will need love and care. Probably a lot of it. Rotary or not makes no difference. If you need the car every day for work or school, a used 2002+ Kia might have been a better choice. In the FAQ there are links on how to evaluate a used RX7, things to look for, things to test. You might want to go through it and get a sense of where you are.

Again, make sure you've read the FAQ. It's available here in the 2nd Gen forum. There are links to the factory service manual (FSM). In there are instructions for how to test things like your MAP sensor.

You should also follow the instructions for how to test the compression with a standard compression checker. That's a standard test to evaluate a used RX but if you skipped it you need to check it as it is a common problem with older engines.

If you need injectors you have 3 choices. Get used one off of the 2nd Gen Parts for Sale section of the forum or Ebay, buy new ones, or take yours out and get them cleaned. I sent mine to KGParts and they turned them around very quickly. You'll need to take the upper intake manifold off (UIM) so read the FSM and find out what gaskets and such you'll have to replace. If you buy used ones you might send them to KG or someone else, get em cleaned and then install them. Less down time that way. Then you can sell yours on the forum.

Good luck. Get the FSM and start testing stuff yourself. It's not hard and a lot less expensive.

Oh, and if you're lucky enough for ReTED, Aaron Cake or HAILERS to respond to your pleas, DO EXACTLY WHAT THEY SAY and respond with EXACTLY THE INFORMATION THEY ASK FOR. They are amazing with these cars but will not long suffer fools who just whine and bitch instead of doing the diagnostics.

Again, good luck. They are good little cars but it aint no souless Civic.

First pull the injectors and send them someplace to be cleaned, I use www.rceng.com but there are other places too. For around $100 you will have four injectors as good as new. This is just good maintenance on a car this old.

Second, while your injectors are being cleaned, check the water thermosensor, make sure it's plugged in, and make sure the pins coming out of the sensor are still there.
Test the boost/pressure sensor per the factory manual.
Post your results.

1- Why a Kia???????... come on man

2- i appreciate any advice i get from anyone here....

3- it might sound like im am whining and stuff, but to me, going from Honda to a Mazda/Rotary engine is like jumping from checkers to chess... iv had 11 cars from age 18-25, all Honda motors up untill now... i know nothing about rotary, and hungry to learn... frustrated right off the bat... but hungry... i know and have seen what this car is capable of.. but i had no idea getting it up to pare would be so ruff... common mistake... thus i came to the heads at RX7club... to get the scoop

but yea i had codes read at Aamco, hole in the wall shop, and Mazda... iv spent $200 just on having SOMEbody tell me whats wrong with it...

at Aamco there was some difficulty getting codes to come up because of the "check engine" light going off... which was strange so i left ignoring anything they told me

"Hole in the wall" told me based on the smell and the way the car was running that it time for a tune up, and if that wasn't it, that injectors don't just go bad and if its choking when i step on the gas its dumping to much fuel and i might have to look into a new map sensor and to take it to Mazda because they didn't mess with rotary...

and after looking for a rotary specialist in sac and coming up empty handed.. i went to Mazda and had them run the codes.... they told me that the map sensor was bad and most of the emissions problems where because of it... then hit me with the $750 for parts and labor...

and here i am... i have done no testing myself, i have no FSM, and about to go buy one

but yea that about it so far

One thing I've learned is to work on these cars yourself. This site is very helpful. Go to your local junkyard and find the parts you need. Replace and see if it helps. I would also clean the fuel injectors. Once you do this you will realize how easy it really is to work on these older cars.

First thing I do when I have gotten an N/A is.....

Full tune-up-fuel filter, air filter, etc

Check timing

Gut the first precat maybe the second depending on the condition

Stay away from the mazda dealer. They really don't want to tell you $750 to fix it.
Read this site and try and learn as much as possible.

Don't have to buy it. Download it for FREE and maybe print a hard copy for reference. I recommend you download the S5 wiring diagrams as well.

i have done no testing myself
Easiest test you can do is probably is testing for error codes stored in the ECU. Best part about it: you don't need anything fancy at all.

Well it took me a few weeks but i found 2 untouched 89 RX7s in a junk yard... tomorrow im going over there and getting eveything fuel and emissions related...

pump, injectors, MAP, o2's,

my question is this... is there anything at all different between the 88-92s that i might have missed... the MAP and injectors and stuff should plug right up correct?

You have 91 which is a S5 car, so look for cars that are 89+, yes some thing carry over, but not what you are looking for. So unless you want to yank the parts and sell them, don't bother on earlier years.
