1990 RX-7 will not go over 40 mph[automatic]
This was a problem with the previous owner. he replaced the automatic transmission and it worked for a lil while but then started doing this again. now i got the car running and it still does this but there is something strange happening. there is a gray button on the shifter. and when im driving and the car is stuck at 40 if i push this button the car will wake up and i hit 70. ive done this a few times but now that gray button trick isnt working. i searched the site and google for this issue and i havent found anything. (search b4 u post etc etc). i plan on swapping it to 5spd manual and im wondering if that might fix the problem? thanks
Maybe that grey button is the shift lock. I guess the trans is getting stuck in a certain gear? How old is the fluid and filter in the trans? Either way something isn't right. A 5 speed swap couldn't hurt ; )
when i push that gray button it says HOLD where my gauges are and stuff. so when driving holding the gas all the way down the car is just lurching like at 40 then i click it twice on/off and it kicks in vroooom im gone. the fluids are all good
I remember years ago I had a RX7 that was going to auction that was auto, it had no performance. We tuned it up and still had nothing. This was before the internet so I called up my local rotary repair guru and he told me the Marvel Mystery Oil de-carbon trick. Well it did the job, the car smoked to high hell for a good 20 minutes but man that thing was running great after that. It might be worth a shot as it seems alot of autos are not driven hard enough to keep them clean.
is the little button next on the shifter? sounds like your overdrive is coming on. whenever the car gets into overdrive, it won't change gears until you click it out of it with the little button on the shifter. there could be a possibility that it keeps going in and out of it without clicking the button.
