I've searched but haven't found any links that have the owner's manual scanned into a pdf. I realize that this does not serve the same purpose as the FSM or wiring diagrams, but for some reason, a lot of FC owners do not have one (and want one).

Everything else has been scanned into a pdf, do you think it's worth it for me to scan a copy of my S5 Owner's Manual for the good of RX7Club? I can do a few pages a day. If there is not much interest, or you think it would be a waste of time, then so be it. I have my copy.

I would like to have a PDF copy of the owners manual. As far as I know, it is not available anywhere.

In fact, I bought a spare copy of the owners manual that I could cut up to do just that. But when I really thought about it, the scale of the job dissuade me from going forward. You would really need to cut up the manual to make it easier to scan.

If you decide to go ahead with this project, I will give you the spare copy to cut up. PM me with a mailing address if you do commit to this project. Only condition is that I get a copy of the PDF file.

Just trying to figure out a good resolution to scan the pages in so that I don't create such a huge file for you guys. Most of the pages are straight black & white, so I will most likely scan those in 1-bit format. This will also get rid of the bleed thru from the opposite page as well. As for the few colored pages, I will probably preserve the colors.

Yeah, this could be a very large file in PDF format. Maybe a PDF guru will chime in with suggestions on how to reduce the file size. You may want to break it down into logical sections with a PDF file for each section. As I said, I can help with converting the pages since I have an older version of Adobe Acrobat.

Do some experiments before proceeding. Scan a few pages and convert to PDF to see what it looks like. You don't want to scan the whole book and then find out you have crappy images.

As far as bleed-through goes, if you have an image program like Photo Shop or equivalent, you can eliminate it by altering the levels. Of course, you don't want to do that for every page, but you can do that for a few troublesome pages.

If you do scan, then use a compact file format (have a try with GIF, JPEG and PNG) then put all files fo create a PDF, Acrobat will ask you the quality level of the images in the pdf. Should not be that big.

I received an email yesterday that the package has arrived. I am out of town right now because I am getting my buddy's '95 RX-7 ready for when he returns on Friday from a year long tour in Afghanistan. I promised that I would take excellent care of it and have it in tip top shape when he returns. I am going to drive back to Atlanta tonight to pick up that package tomorrow and return the next day to pick up my friend from the airport and spend time with him and his family. Still in the process of moving about a mile down the road in Atlanta. I have a scanner in my new apartment in Atlanta and the place I will be staying while my friend is home. I should be able to get some kind of sample to you guys after a few days.

 

Looking forward to the samples! Damn, that media mail is slow.

I left some of the original paperwork in the manual. Check out the MSRP on the original invoice. And that was in 1990 dollars. Guess it would be in the $50K range in current dollars.

BTW, this was not my car.

 

I died a little inside when I dismembered the pages from the manual.

Here's a sample of the first few pages. I know, PrimoPDF killed the quality, and I plan on going to the library to use the Adobe PDF Pro creator software sometime soon.

I'm having a bit of difficulty of removing the bleed through on the colored pages, but I did a quick brush over on the major areas in Paint. I have no Photoshop skills.

All the pages are scanned as 6" x 8" pages in 200 dpi. Black and white pages are scanned in 1-bit B&W, and colored pages are in 8-bit colors - so the orange turned out a little pink. However, this cuts down on size big time.

I left out the blank page just before Chapter 1.

When I get a chance to use a real PDF creator, I'll post another copy of this, and hopefully, the quality will be a bit better. (And the pages will already be turned in the right way).

 

I know what you mean about cutting up the manual. That's why I bought that one. Didn't want to destroy mine since it is in pristine condition.

I can't get the pages at that link to come up. Status says downloading, but no bits coming in after an initial few bits.

If you scan at 200 dpi, and keep the original page size, that should be more than adequate. To get rid of bleed through, adjust the level in your scanner acquisiton software before scanning, or do it in an image program like PS Essentials after scanning. Best to do it befire you scan. That way the image created at that point should not need additional processing.

Total file size: 26.4MB

Most pages are scanned in 1-bit format at 200dpi or 300dpi. Front and back are full color, and the few colored pages inside are 8-bit color. I tried to remove as much bleed thru as possible; I only have so much mspaint skills.

This document is not perfect, but I had to keep file size in mind. You should have no trouble reading/navigating it. If you think it looks bad, then PM me and I will send you the pictures (~190MB) for your pleasure. I am not going to kill myself over every straight line.

I would like to thank Go48 for donating one of his manuals for me to dismember and scan for this project. He and I discussed about how the file should be broken up and decided that it should be one large file. Go48, I did manage to include bookmarks for each chapter.

I case you didn't notice, this is the 1990 Owner's Manual. It is good for anybody with an S5 (89-91). Please do not ask me to scan a copy of the S4 manual. I do not have the patience. Owning an S5 turbo helped give me motivation for this project. I do not own an S4, sorry.

Scanning the manual was not pleasant, but hopefully you will all find this useful - especially those who do not have an Owner's Manual. No, it will not tell you how to rebuild your engine, turbo your NA, etc.; it's a cute document to have as a piece of RX-7 history.

* Note that I cannot host this file forever. When I graduate from college in December, I think they disable my prism.gatech.edu ~6 months later. If the forum mods have some kind of archive system, or if someone else wants to host this, be my guest. I will keep this up as long as possible until I leave this place forever.
