1990 convertible tach not working

okay tach was working before I put in the new transmission so I put in the new transmission now the tach not working it does work for a second right when you start it up but then it stops any help on this is much appreciate

The tach gets its signal from the trailing ignition coil. The symptoms you describe may be a result of the ECU deciding that the coil is bad, and taking it off-line. If you check for trouble codes, you might confirm that the ECU is reporting a bad trailing coil.

The coil itself may or may not be failed. Check for +12v at the connector, and also proper ground under the coil (it grounds directly to the body underneath). It may be as simple as corrosion that built up under the coil while the car was inop during the transmission change.

If you think the coil is bad, use the search feature and you will find a thread where someone has designed a cheap and easy coil checker. There are also coils available in the for sale section in this forum.

There is a complete FSM available in the FAQ section as a download that will likely be very helpful in sorting this out.
