1989 TII Project

I have decided to compile my rotary build into a single topic this is also for addition to the major projects sticky. My goal for this project is to have streetable car producing 300-350 horsepower without removing P/S and A/C. So lets get started.

Project Title - Unnamed as of yet.

Car: 1989 Mazda RX-7 TII

Current Status: Stock, Running

Project Goal: Daily driver with 300-350 HP Upgraded sound system\entertainment system, In-Dash GPS, On-board computer, trackable (Not really to win more so to just have fun driving) Have a car that seems like it came from factory (aside from smog/emissions crap I'm all for emissions but not in my 7!)

Time Goal: Doesn't matter but hopefully plan to complete within 5 years (taking school into consideration)

ECU: micro/haltech with meqasquirt as a piggyback

Engine: All i can think about right now is a street port. upgraded injectors (to be updated)

Turbo: BNR STAGE 3 with turbo back (custom or prefab undecided)

The project History

My project has not been long running but already I can say that I have hit a few snags. Upon purchasing the car I had done so without compression test and without actually seeing the car. For one I have learned never to do that. The car was shipped and when I received it I was overjoyed. The interior was in great condition (at this current point needs to be vacuumed) with a few problems (mainly gauge cluster area.) Rear wiper switch doesn't work however both speed of wipers still work but the wiper does not return to position when shut off. cruise control works oddly (Most likely going to remove it though, i was never a fan of cruise control). The turn signal switch works however the screw that connects it to the gauge cluster surround cracked however I have some idea's I'm thinking up about the gauge cluster area so that will be relocated slightly anyway. Exterior was in fairly good shape but after some consideration instead of fixing some of the faded area's i am going to do a full repaint upon project completion. The tail lights are fine aside from the passenger side light sticking out (where the red lights meet turn signal) however the overall shape of the body itself is fantastic (a few minor dents but nothing that hurts my eyes!) Engine bay is relatively clean for a 15 year old car. It really isn't an issue for me at the time because I plan on worrying about look near the end of the project.

Now for the major issue. Upon starting up the car idles roughly and surges around 50-100 rpm until warm (however began to get worse) the first time I pushed her it seemed fine however it was only able to achieve a normal acceleration once (as in 750 to 7000 without hesitation) i believe it was luck. I had the car compression tested at a no name shop (free) and they gave me good numbers (...) so I figured it was something else. Checked out several things as per forum and with mixed results. Decided to get a second compression test and a somewhat more knowledgeable shop i assume. low compression rebuild time T-T. My greatest fear realized. After some chatting with seller I got some money for the rebuild and began my search. decided on getting it rebuilt by Karack.

Car sat for awhile me doing periodic starts and whatnot. Then finally drop off day. Took a van got a dolly and i was on my way. Dropped the car off to be rebuilt.

After the rebuild I go to pick it up and the car still has a few problems but decided to break it in before trying to figure anything out.

700 mark so far and the car still has it s problems (hesitation at 5000 until the car is warm (I believe could be more of an electrical issue but unsure) and jerking at slight throttle (especially bad when cold and disappears when warm) Not even 50 miles after an oil change and the oil is already black. I can throw my ideas out on this one but i still have a vast lack of knowledge on that topic. So at this point in time i am going to do another compression test and then consult karack on what to do.

The car runs fine when warm accelerations beautifully when warm and is loud (3 in corksport cat back which I am planning on selling or trading)

fixed my window issue and plan on sending my switches and such to icemark to be rebuilt.

Current step is to get the car running properly at stock condition (While I believe i would be able to do it on my own this is vital as I need a stable base to build from so I'll be having someone else diagnose and fix my problem most likely karack)

The future

Once the car is up to stock running condition my first goal will be removal of emissions and sub-zero staring assist and ABS. I am debating the emissions as i might try to see if I can produce a smogable car at 300+ hp but I do not believe I will keep it. The ABS is being removed as it leaks (sporadically so far it hasn't leaked at all).

Once those are removed I plan on replacing clutch master and slave. Replacing oil cooler and probably oil cooler lines. I am also debating on removing/disabling the OMP and premixing or keeping it for now and possibly once I begin doing engine work and go standalone (microtech or haltech and possibly having megasquirt as a piggy back to one of those I wont delve into this topic yet as I haven't complete thought this through) and have the oil injection feed of a completely seperate oil tank. I like this idea a lot as I do not have to premix and I can use 2 stroke oil still as well however I am still designing this idea (I do not know if I can use a haltech or microtech to control a separate oil injection system hence the megasquit piggyback idea) I also plan on relocating the oil filter as its current location is very undesirable. I also plan on going cone filter and creating a custom cold air box.

That is it for now I will be updating this as I remember project info and all that but for now this is it. I will have pictures up today or tomorrow and I will link this to the major project sticky. All big inside projects will be separated most likely. (for instance the oil injection.) Feel free to post comments criticisms insults its what forums are for!

Haltech and Microtech are both standalone engine management systems. A Megasquirt would be redundant to try and piggy back on either. Megasquirts can also be standalone systems in addition to piggy backs.

actually the idea for the megasquirt piggy back was for a theoretic oil injection system that would not use the existing MOP/OMP. As I do not believe i would be able to use a system like that through haltec or microtec. There are other things I am thinking about however I still have yet to actually research throughly.

I'm very interested in this project as I have similar goals. It could only be more perfect if this were an S4. Good luck!

Don't plan completing this project as school and such is going to be coming up for me soon. Currently only thing I am getting done is fixing any problems that come up and restoring anything that needs to be. I might also be starting a project on fixing s5 electric MOPs as well as modifying them for 2 stroke use. I was going to do a how to replace the electric MOP for a second gen but I did not have a camera at the time I did it so I will most likely do that when I go to mod for 2 stroke.

So far the car is running good no problems other than some cold starting issues and an idle issue. Going to check cold start assist. I may also start cleaning the engine bay and such and getting rid of my leaks (Notice some oily spots around the oil pan area) and replace my oil cooler and lines.

May be going stand alone soon just have it set up. I may infact just wait until after school and after a little while of saving money to begin the project so I can buy all the equipment (at least the major stuff) all at once so I can have the car completely in pieces all at one time. However things like the 2 stroke mod and cleaning up the engine bay I will be doing sometime soon.

::EDIT::

I almost forgot the issue I was having with the car was caused by a coolant thermosensor. I probably should have tried figuring that out myself to save some cash but oh well.

Current planned setup is
BNR Stage 4 Hybrid Turbo
Tuned on microtech (with working A/C and P/S however I have to do it)
Running 1600cc injectors all around (maybe 720 all around) with alcohol injection (For days when I want to run high boost)
Intercooler setup is still up in the air.
Emissions removal however have it setup to be reinstall come smog (maybe)
MOP mod for 2 stroke oil.

Interior:

Not quite sure yet, most likely going to keep the stock interior look and just have everything redone. However the dash may be redone for my electronics goodies. Gauge cluster and surround will definitely be redone as i will be replacing the gauges however I will keep the switches intact. gauges i plan on using are autometer nexus gauges. getting a double bay deck with touch screen to operate my carputer. Will also do a custom sound system. All of this will be done in a fashion that looks stock.

Exterior:

Rims and a front lip is all I'll be getting. Not sure on the lip or rims yet. Car will be repainted blue (Completely stripped down and painted all through). A dark blue most likely. everything else will stay the same. May also replace Turbo II sticker with another logo that doesn't through turbo out to everyone (even though my BOV will muahahahaha)

Electrical:

Battery relocation. Will relocate battery to passenger side bin. Will had fuse box for accessories (such as carputer) Carputer will be located in driverside bin (with proper ventilation and will probably use liquid cooling to be on the safe side.
Complete engine bay rewire. FD alternator (upgraded most likely)

May be more to this. I'm really using this as one of my forms of organization for the car. Will post up some sketches of my ideas.

I'm ready ha ha. Trying to rush things put me on some set backs but now I am a little more patient.

Another thing I decided to plan on doing was refining the suspension a bit. Going to need some people to help with that ha ha.

Also plan for exhaust to be single passenger side exit and mold off the driver side. Have some ideas for my gauges cluster that I drew out.

Also I am debating if I should build a motor with brand new houses and rotors or not. I'll probably just be really **** about how much in spec my current housings are come build time.

Will have pictures of the car as it sits and ill photoshop my ideas onto it as well. Since the car is down tomorrow that would probably be a good day =P

As of last week or so the project is being suspended. School has taken priority. I'll be selling the FC and maybe picking up another in the future. Or maybe even getting an Rx-8. I will continue to stay in the commuity even with my... Plymouth Neon T-T

Back from the depths of hell!

The RX-7 project has been reborn however the 7 itself has changed! I currently am driving a 1987 GXL now however for the most part my project remains the same.

A few things I have decided to not include in this project is the idea for a carputer. Originally I had planned on installing one in the TII but after further thought I decided that the furthest I would go in terms of entertainment is maybe a dvd headunit and component speakers. Installing a carputer when I will mostly be listening to just music in this car would be silly, and for gps I can just get a stand alone unit. Plus the main goal of this car is streetable power.

So enough with that rambling this is the current project as i have outlined. I will be building the N/A motor. Still debating on s4 or s5 rotors, but this is going to be turbo so s4 might be better because of its lower compression. For the turbo I am thinking a hybrid turbo but that may change in the future. Now for the extra power I will be switching to a turbo tranny which I will have rebuilt before installation. For the ECU I will be using megasquirt.

Now all that will be in the future, the current goal of this project is to keep the car in running condition and upgrading the sound system, probably to component speakers.

More details to come! This really is just an update that the project has been reborn!

The new title, Project 1987 RX-7 GXL TURBO!
