1986 rx7 smokes help!!!!!
i just bought a 1986 rx7 it runs great but when i accelerate it smokes when im shifting in to the higher gear but only when im at like 6000 rpm and then it stops after i shift what causes this and how do i fix
NA Oil ring test:
While stopped, hold the RPM at 4K for about 5 seconds.
Snap close the throttle.
When the tach gets down to 1K, gun it a second.
Look for an exhaust cloud of blue-white smoke.

Other possibilities:
Disconnected MOP linkage. (oil metering full on)
Too thin base oil like 5W-30.
Light weight synthetic oil.
Worn out oil seals. (They should go 200,000 mi in an NA)
Side irons warped from overheating.

if you want to fix it, rebuild.
however, i have had good success with the following methoid to put off rebuilding as long as possible:
1)change your oil to 15w 40 diesel oil. run for 100-200 miles
2)change to castrol 20 w 50, with 1.5 quarts of MMO. run for 1-2k miles.
3)change to castrol 20w 50. drive her till she blows, then rebuild.
this wont eliminate smoking but it will help a lot.
another optional step: before the 15w 40, fill the oil with 2 quarts of oil, and the rest mmo. start car, run for 30-60 secs. shut off, wait a minute, do it again. do this about 10 times. then change oil to 15w 40 and follow the rest of the steps.
reasons for this:
MMO dissolves carbon, swells seals.
15w 40 diesel oil is very high detergent, which helps to also dissolve carbon and other deposits.
castrol 20w 50 is a superior oil which lubricates, cools and runs better
