18.6 Wtf Is Wrong W? This Car

We were at the drag strip today and my friend decieded to run his N/A 86 5spd at the drag strip. so ok, we run it the first time and he almost stals it on the line, but it runs a 18.6 WTF. thats F'n slow for a N/A w/ intake full exhaust (yes it has a header) and plug wires. so i was like WTF. on the second pass he runs a 18.7 but somthing fucked up and the coolent bottle was blowing its lid off and a the car was cooking its self, but the radiator was cool to the touch. AGAIN WTF. I have no idea. what do u peps think?

Other than the coolant system, was this just a worthless rant cause your friend cant drive?

sounds like you got a faulty thermostat. or somethings really clogged. a good launch will make a world of a difference in the overall time

yeah it's important not to stall the car when starting a drag race, i'd practice doing launches in your garage first before hitting the track....

And i would agree that there probably something wrong with the cooling system by your descrition...maybe running a crazy(as in wrong temperature rating) thermostat or low coolant/just water... idk

A friends almost stock 86 GXL 5 speed ran a 15.6 I believe. A slight bit of weight reduction and a cone filter/heat shield.

BTW it does sound like he cant drive for ***** if he stalls on a hard launch... that seems impossible to me but w/e...

Do you have the aux ports hooked up to anything?

Gotta ask if you have aftermarket exhaust.

whats wrong with it?

its a na rx7
those things are soo slow
they are designed that way so that it doesnt make enough power to hurt itself and they can use fb transmission and stuff

on top of that, the fact that it is a 20 yrs old car, that is probably not maintained well, have all sorts of vac leaks and bad tps and afm that doesnt read as good anymore, thats a decent time....

my '88 GXL was bad *** man, used to pull hard as hell all over like a pro, why does everyone say their so slow? maybe not as fast as a TII but it's faster than alot of other cars I have driven, and it was reliable as a daily driver, I guess it depends on the condition of the specific car as well huh......

idk... with a professional driver, the time should be around 15 seconds.... so if his driving is mediocre, 18 is not unrealistic

that said it sounds like he has a bad thermostat.

I don't know why non-turbo owners expect to bust a 15- or 16-second 1/4-mile pass with their cars.

18.x is not something unreasonable for someone without an NHRA license...

I don't see anything wrong.

Just like everyone else said it really doesn't sound that unrealistic.

What did you think it was going to run?

FTW!!

hahahaha, well I couldn't pass on the TII, I'm just saying my GXL had some ***** as far as I was concerned.......but i even remember other RX7 owners remarking how smooth my car sounded compared to theirs, "Oh man, it still has that nice purring sound...", upkeep and lack of abuse probably help quite a bit with the overall perfoamnce of a car, I never tried the 1/4 mi with that car though so I couldn't tell you..

good call though...anyone want a GXL for cheap??

Hell with an NA you might as well just drop the clutch at 5k anyway and hammer, you don't really get much traction issues with a limited slip and 130lbs of torque in a rwd car.

Hahahahahahahaha. Ted you hating on n/a's? Non-turbo owners should expect to hit a 15 or 16 with there car if they have it in good shape and well maintained. I ran 2 runs with a broken differential mount and a 2.6, yes 2.6 60 ft time. I was only launching at 2500 rpms because of the loud thud i would hear scared me and i still hit a 16.7 @ 83 mph. Now if you are saying us non-turbo owners can't make it into the 15's you are smoking the rock or hating. I recently found out 4 months ago that i didn't even have my aux ports working when i went to the track. With my solid differential mount and my car running to its full potential, i can easily make my car run solid 15's. So Ted, stop hating because you are a turbo guru. Just my 2 rotor cents.

it could also be a clogged radiator, you said it was cool to the touch but your overflow was spewing? sounds more like the rad.
