13b turbo won't turn over by hand

Just tried to turn it over by hand and it's fine to a point. It feels like it's got compression even with the plugs out and won't complete a turn. It only had the intake and exhaust manifolds bolted on.

What do you mean wont complete a turn, like it spins and then locks up at a certain spot?

It's done a few ks and it's stock. It was running fine when I took it off the road. I took it off just to clean/paint/remove emissions etc.

It turns smoothly then gets hard to turn, just as if the spark plugs are in and it has compression. If I turn it as far as it goes and let go it springs back a little.

It's not like it turns and hits something either it just turns freely then gets really tight.

well... if you think about it... if you are turning the engine over by hand (as in the turning the crank pulley), with the plugs in the motor... it is gonna get hard to turn once it build compression.

Yeah, be glad, good compression is good.

My old motor was easy to turn by hand....I mean hand, not by wrench.

After it "gets really tight" do you hear air chug out of the exhaust ports? Clarify a little more, will it actually turn all the way in circles or is it just hard to turn? You should hear one burst of air every time you turn it half way. It takes six "bursts" to complete a cycle I believe. Sorry if I am stating the obvious here.
