13b s4 swap question
13b s4 swap question
I am in the process of doing a swap on an 86 gxl rx7. This car is setup for a 5spd transmission. The engine im going to swap in it is also a 13b but was setup with an automatic transmission. To the best of my knowledge all I have to swap from my standard engine to automatic engine is the flywheel? Being that my new engine was connected to an automatic, is there going to be any implications with re-using my old wiring harness or vacuum lines?
From what I recall the whole reasoning to swapping the flywheel was because of the counterweights? Is there a front counterweight that also must be removed? does the flywheel only bolt on one way? Is it possible to incorrectly install the flywheel such that the engine wont be balanced?
2nd question. My clutch looks slightly wore out, what is proper spec tolerances for clutch wear? the depth of the clutch grooves is approximately an 1/8th of an inch.
thanks to all that can help

As far as I know, it should be straightforward to put on the manual stuff on the new engine AS LONG AS its a series 4 engine. The flywheel is keyed so you can only put it on one way.
I don't know clutch wear specs.

Yes, the only thing you have to change when swapping in an engine that was attached to an automatic is to remove the flexplate/counterweight and add an S4 flywheel an clutch kit. Nothing is overly different, save a couple items on the throttlebody that dont really affect driving. Or instead of swapping the counterweight, just remove the flexplate and order a lightweight flywheel to bolt to the counterweight.

i have a 86 base and swapped it to a turbo2 motor so its about the same as mine.
since motor is out change all the vac lines those are normally worn out already on any 20+ year old cars .
reuse the harnesses on the car. the electrical and emitions harnesses .
change the flywheel to the manual trans one. or just replace if its not to thickness spec. or glazed.... if glazed you can send in the flywheel in for a resurface if it isnt to thin.... ((TORK the flywheel bolts to spec !))
i forget what it is, i think its 60 foot pds?
i also put blue thread lock on the bolts as well if you are planning to put some hard loads on this car. BUT this isnt recomended.... for a normal install.
as far as the clutch get a new one with throwout bearing and preasure plate. it would be less of a headache after wards if you just get a new one. and ease of mind.
best of luck on install . if your not clear on some thing post
good luck!

Thanks for confirming my thoughts. I just wasn't 100% sure.
One question that im a little grey on is if the front drive pulley also needs to be swapped over to my replacement motor. Im referring to the pulley that is tucked in behind the fan. Or is that fine to leave as it is balanced from factory with the rotating assembly for each individual engine?
