Mounting points are different. If you can get passed that you really wouldn't be asking this question in the first place.

To answer your question. It can be done.

i was wondering this too since i can get a hold of a 12a with tranny and everything. i'll be keeping an eye on this thread.

i do know the engine mount is located in the front of a 12a and there is a kit to put a 13b in a fb i don't know about the other way around. good luck

By the time you get everythig fabbed up for a 12a you could of swapped a 13b in it.

I have done it before we used another set of steering rack mounts and welded up motor mounts on top of them, then use your crank fire distributer and build a air tight cap to sit on the carb, and run the air snorkel from the stock air flow meter to the carb ,that way when it starts to turn over it will work the timing and fuel pump relay, also change the fuel pump to a 12a ,you can remove the FI, unit and just put a pipe in place, then mount the 12a in line .................Good Luck

I did have 12a in FC.. But engine never start, but owner before me said that car drive ok, have power but not too much.. hehe

But you must have coils, tranny etc.. Mounting points are different, but it is easy to put engine in..

Picture..

I went scrapyard shopping a couple weekends ago. I found FOUR FCs (Two S5 and Two S4) and ONE SA/FB... The First Gen was a GSL-SE, so it was 13B powered.

Seriously, with the rarity of first gens in the scrapyard compared to the second gen, why not sell the 12A and buy a 13B?

It'll be easier, you'll have more power, and you won't have to deal with fabricating mounting brackets. I don't understand why one would want to downgrade.

If you really must have a 12A, there isn't much wiring that has to be done. Ignition signal from the distributor to the coils should do the trick for spark... Then just a fuel pressure regulator to drop fuel pressure down to 3 PSI or so and hook fuel to the carb. Done deal.

So the stock port 12A makes about 100HP, or 120HP or so when you bolt on a header and full exhaust. Your FC made 146 HP stock, so already you are down 20/40HP.

Now, the earlier engines like the 12A mount on the front iron, so you'll need to fab up a mount. That's not really a huge deal.

You'll need to either replace the EFI fuel pump with a low pressure carb pump, or use a regulator to bring down the pressure to something the carb will handle.

You will need the ignition system out of a 1st gen including the coils and dizzy with ignitors and then you'll need to wire it all up.

Since no one makes an exhaust to put a 12A into a 2nd gen, you will need to get a 12A header and make your own exhaust to mate it to the 2nd gen system. Oh, since the engine is carbureted you'll need to remove the cats.

And there are a few other differences that I didn't mention like: cooling hoses, oil cooler lines, coolant temp sensor differences, heater lines, vacuum hoses, etc.

Just not worth it for a significant downgrade.

I'm going to go with the general attitude of everyone else.

Pros:
Save money $

Cons
Less power
More work
Lot of headaches
Lot of fabrication
Lot of rewiring
Lots of custom work in general

So..... hmm.... trying to save money will probably end up costing you money.

You can find a manifold for the holley that'll work on a 13b but the 12a one wont.

I've seen this done and even drove the car myself. Not worth it. Car was street ported and still felt only as fast as a base model. Definatly not worth it.

You can find 13b engines for the same price you paid for the 12a.

Won't even save money. Engines are all the same cost if you look in the right place.
