$500 project... a good deal?
Ok, I'm still looking for a dirt cheap Rex... and I think I might have found the project that needs to sit in my driveway... I haven't seen it yet but it sounds promising.
The Details:
-1989 Rx-7 GLX
-5-speed
-Black with Black Interior, cloth seats
-Paint in good condition, no rust, 2 small dents
-Interior is in decent shape
-Has been sitting for 9 months
-Motor lost compression... the guy said it has compression sometimes and at other times it has no compression... so it sounds like its time for a rebuild
He wants $500... Does this sound like a reasonable price?
Thanks,
Rob

That's pretty much exactly what I did.
1989 RX-7 TurboII 5-speed Brilliant Black/Black
Paint/body in good (not perfect!) condition; still glossy with minor spidercracking in portions, can't see it from three feet away.
Interior in good shape except for missing seats (I have seats from my first RX-7)
Been sitting for about 18 months now.
Engine blew a rear apex seal and managed to crack the rear rotor housing too.
$800 includes a never-used ACT 4-puck clutch disc and heavy-duty pressure-plate, newly rebuilt turbocharger, some nice suspension mods, 3000-mile-old Yokohama ES100s, and some spare FC parts. I think that I could turn around and make a profit after I put an engine in, if I wanted to. I don't want to. Clean S5 TIIs are hard to find around here--I was on the active lookout for 2+ years, and this one just fell into my lap by a strange turn of events.
If the car looks good, I'd say go for it. Lots of FC owners stumble their way into deals like this. As long as you're ok with throwing $1500-$3000 at it for an engine, possibly more depending on what else is wrong with the car, and you realize that you most likely will never again see the money you sink into it, then go for it! Projects and resurrections are fun!

I'd say definitely do it. Here is a pic of my 89 GTU after a lot of work and time, I paid $400 or it and brought it back. So far I've spent about $6500 including an engine rebuild with street porting.
You can't get a better performing car for the money it'll take to make it road worthy.

I'm definately going to go an look at it... for $500 it doesnt seem like I can go wrong until I start to sink money into it... like SureShot said, I can always part it out for more than I paid. Maybe the kid will take less when I get the cash out and start counting the bills... As far as the rebuild goes... it seems I can get a decent rebuild done for around 1000-1500 as long as the motor isn't totally trashed, and hopefully not much else is wrong after that.. but I've been looking and I can't find a decent Rex(or any other 1985+ sports cars) around here for less than $2000.

Ok, I went and saw the car today. Its in ok condition, it needs to be cleaned inside and out. The front fenders are beat up(just a dent on the pass side, and the driver's side has a halfassed repair job on it and for some reason it doesnt fit right) The paint is worn off in a small spot on the rear quater, but almost no rust, just a spot here or there. The clear is peeling on the bumper and the whole car could use a wash and wax. I have pictures and will try to post them. It seems like I can get it for like $350-400 so I'm not really seeing how I could lose... till I start trying to fix it up. The car sitting behind the FC is an FB, I believe it is dark green but it was completely burried in snow. The kid hates the FB, he has an extra engine and tranny for it, and he wantes to junk it, but its his mom's(he gave it to her becasue she paid his bills). So, what would really seal the deal would be to get both cars for like $500-600.

Ok guys, sorry to keep bringing this up but I need more arguements for why these cars should come sit in my barn and not in this kid's yard... I'm pretty sure I'm going to get the black car, I'm sure he will take less than $500 becasue he stressed the obo part when I asked him how much he was asking... I called him back and said that his mom would be willing to take $250 for the FB, $750 for both. Do I want an FB "rough shape" with an extra engine and tranny that "should run" for $250. Do I want them both for $750. Or do I want to offer them $400 for the FC or 600 for both? Should I try for $350 on the black car... since its a little beat up. I mean I don't want to insult the kid, but I need money for my rebuild too. How much do you think I could get out of that FB (body in fair condition, 5speed) if the spare engine did run? I know you can't give me exact figures but anything helps...
Thanks again,
Rob

you can always always part out the Fb to us in the 1st gen section. we are just as cheap as you guys if not cheaper but yea I would definately think you could get more than $250 for it from the parts. plus anything you tear down the bad FB engine for fun and learn. find out what year the FB is and i can give ya more specifics on how rare stuff is. also ask about the interior of it. sorry bout this off-topic just throwing in my .02.
