Is $289 sounds right for an S-AFC?

That's pretty good - I've seen 'em new for about low-$300s.

(clickety click) I take that back...

http://www.german-autowerks.com has 'em for $290 shipped to your door. I bought my 60mm water temp gauge from them, and had no problems with their service - the prices are REALLY hard to beat.

wait around on ebay for a while there are cheaper prices and if you look on parts trader there is one guy that sells them really cheap and not damn 23 dollars shipping for a thing that weighs 2 pounds
