Vert Speaker Boxes
I am not a audio setup person. But I do want better sound out of my vert. The rear speaker boxes sound like they are underwater. I just replaced them with 4" two ways, but they sound just as bad as the stockers. Is this a problem with the OEM amp? or just 20 year old speaker wire? I do not have the seats with the speaker headrests. I don't have the volume control hooked up. Would that matter as well?
and if anyone has a better setup, I did a search and all I can find is huge speaker systems that take up all the space. Looking for something a little more subtle.
Thanks

By rear speakers you mean the ones in the doors? I have some aftermarket speakers in there that sound alright; definitely not like they're under water. The door speaker amp is still wired in and the wiring is stock. The volume control you mentioned would be for the headrest speakers, so it sounds like your car once had the leather seats. But the volume control doesn't affect the door or under-dash speakers.
I actually just removed my original seats with the headrest speakers over the weekend, so I'm considering options that will give me the "surround sound" I had with the headrest speakers (I found some perfect condition coupe seats that were too good to pass up). Some speakers mounted in the carpet panel that covers the spare tire would work well, and you could fit something as large as 6x9s in there.

I have the vert with the 4" subwoofer boxes option located behind the seats in the enclosure. They were triangular boxes. Those are the rear speakers. Not the door speakers.

Which is kinda what I was thinking. So did you bypass or remove the OEM amp? I was thinking down the road looking into replacing the seats with the speakers in the head rest. Does the stock wiring for those run through the amp? or can I remove it?
Pictures? I tracked down what you're talking about, and it looks like an S5-only deal. Apparently all the S5 verts got rear woofers. Page Z-102 of the S5 wiring diagram shows a separate amp for these woofers. There's also an "acoustic equilibration system" which may be separate from the stock stereo. If this is separate, and you're using the stock wiring, it could be causing the sound-quality problems you're having.
As for the headrest speakers, there is another amp just for them that sits behind the driver-side seat (where the storage bins would be on a coupe), or at least that's where it is on an '88.

darth i am doing a swap of the old pioneers with the updated ones....i had to disconnect the oem pioneer amp located under the passenger dash. but i tried to connect it from the oem wiring of the speakers to the wires that came out from the amp plug. but the rear new speaker didnt work so i bypassed from the harness with new speakers wires and used the oem plugs and are working fine....i also have the speakers in the head rest but havent figured out what to do with them, i mean they sounded blown anyways lol... well good luck with your set up!
I found a thread with some pictures: https://www.rx7club.com/showpost.php...7&postcount=21.
It looks like it would be really easy to fit something like a 6" speaker in there. I never knew Mazda did this

Its not. The box is really small, but those are them.
LOL I hate searching sometimes. I dont think it works. I tried for 2 days straight in every section and never found anything like that.
Anyways, going to look into bypassing the amp and running straight wire when I get a chance to see if that helps. Thanks again!
