Stock airbox into "CAI"

I was thinking, why not modify the stock airbox?

So far while looking at it the port is kinda restrictive and where it sucks air in the front seems rather restrictive.

So what I was thinking (I've never used fiber glass but my old friend who does weird projects said it'd be perfect for this) cover the hole where it currently sucks air, then (Not sure if I can do this with fiber glass) but redo some of the top section and make a part where you can attach some piping that sucks cold air from the bumper.

A non stock intake will raise questions when a cop asks to pop the hood, how bout a complete stock looking air box? I've put some thought into this, I can see that the stock airbox doesn't suck fully "cold" air in, I can see what mazda did though and it seems like a pretty good idea, if you think about the size of the stock air filter, and a cone filter, it's almost the same area of contact to suck in air... so if the stock air box was sucking in fresh air, bigger pipe, how would it perform worse than a cone filter?

What do you guys think? I'm not expecting a 5hp gain, I don't care if theres really no gain as its just a time waster project, if you guys think its a good idea I'll document the work I do and post it for those interested, and I'll do a butt dyno , I really think it'll bring the stock air box to perform as good (or maybe better) than a cone filter.

Wow that takes the cake.

It's still a civic, and wouldnt the cop notice the turbo right there?

I'm still gonna go forth and try this out I don't want to buy a cone filter heh

The way your proposing to make this will still require a cone filter, the placement of the tube is gonna put the opening below the stock filter in the original box, essentially skipping the filter and sending whatever you suck up into your engine.

I seen a site where a guy plumbed his cone filter in front of the radiator, and just tilted the radiator back a little and built a simple shroud around it, he had an electric fan.. but figure this could also hide the air filter .

Even easier you could rebuild the current piping to seal better and cut a hole and add alil tube.

I plan to use fiberglass to raise the top right there and make a part where I can attach the pipe.. I already thought about that since it's only 2 inch high or so

Yeah but remember its short so it will clear the hood, in my opinion, it would be best to just leave the stock filter out of the box and slap a cone filter on the end of the pipe.

FAIL

The Trifecta of fail

1) Fiberglass and plastic don't mix for very long
2) You'll need to hack the sheet metal to hell to get a filter behind the headlights and under the stock box
3) It's not a cold air intake if it's injesting ambient air. I hate the term cold air intake.
