S4-S5 smoked/clear coated vert tail swap

I painted these the other night, got around to putting them on tonight.
They dont look AS dark in person, I think they came out great and really shine the back of the car up.
I have to get some daytime shots to get a good comparison.

Let me add the following:
I did NOT have a S5 center, I did not have to trim a single thing from the S4 center OR the S5 tails.
I did not have to dremel the housings to fit the bulbs, all you have to do is play with them a little and they go in FINE.
All I had to do was trim a tiny amount of metal to clear the back up bulbs, you dont even have to cut it out, just put 2 slits and
tap the metal in a little.

Before, my s4 housings were tinted a little bit, and I did the housings which are restored/painted a long time ago

After:

some engine shots:

and one more thing- I did not have, or require the wiring harness from a S5 car.

this is more for when someone searches so they know whats needed, even though its been covered dozens of times that is.

Looks good. I did the same to my s5 vert tails, but not as dark and they're modernized.

Sweet ride.

In most cases smoked tails look bad but on a black car they look awesome! Good job!

I used the VHT nite shades in a spray can. Did a few coats until it got to the right darkness. Let it dry, put a few coats of clear, then wet sanded w/ 1200-1500. then polish.

Body shops can do it too. They just add some black to the clear.

I used DuPont Imron, I mixed translucent or light solids black tint with clear.
The lights shine as much as the paint on the car- which is also Imron

You can get the same effect with glossy black spray paint and clear over it. That stuff may be a bit better.

no you cant- it will be very uneven trying to spray straight black spray paint over plastic and have it where you can still have light come through, you need translucent black paint- like the night shades.

If you dont have access to spray equipment the night shades and clear coat is your answer, but it aint going to last like a good paint will.
Not really a problem for a garage kept car anyhow.

are you saying cans of spray paint will be better then Imron??

I can vouch for VHT niteshades. I used in on my tails last year and they are still going strong. Car is not kept in a garage either. It was a pain to hunt down the can as only 1 store carried it. They were a small mom and pop old school muscle car shop.

Did a coat, let dry. Did a few more till it was the darkness I wanted. Then wetsand with 1500 or 2000grit then clear coat. Wet sand again and polish them.
