9 months ago this was a bone stock, automatic, 1989 GTU with an anemic engine (non functional VDI and aux ports).
We completly tore the car down, just about every nut and bolt and built what you see here. I have had very little time to document the build but i hope this winter to take pics and do some writeup.
First thanks to my friends GooRoo, Damian, and benandersonracing.com it makes all of it worth it to race and build with you guys...
Some build highlights:
- Pineapple Stock Port Series 5 Race motor (stage 3 oil mods). Built from almost all new parts, the only used parts were the rotors and the e-shaft. Wired open VDI and aux ports.
- Pineapple rebuilt series 4 transmission with custom trany mount for auto chassis (1986 gears)
- Stance 8k/6k coilovers
- Stock Sway bars
- Full Corksport 2.5" exhaust with headers
- Rtek 2.0
-Fully rewired. The engine harness, front harness and rear harness were completly removed and new circuits were wired and harnessed from scratch. Only the stock emissions harness was used and half the wires were pulled out of it.
- Depowered 15.1:1 rack.
- Removed A/C
- removed Dash and all equipment underneath
- Fuel tank empty with no driver, full stock glass and steel body panels the car weighs in at 2300lbs.
- All emissions removed
- Bone stock fuel system (no issues and no fuel starvation until down to about 3-4 gal in the tank)
- Miata Torsen Rear end with various gear ratios (4.1, 4.3, and 5.12) is what we will run depending on which track we are at.
- Aluminum flywheel and driveshaft
- 6-pot wilwood front brakes with 2-piece rotors and rs/rz rear brake rotors

Is it competitive? 2300 lbs wohoo! It kinda looks like a racecar, but no splitter or spoiler? What tires/rims (and sizes)? Pics of the brakes? Any ducting to the brakes? Still running a rear sway bar? Sorry, I have a million more questions. How do you like the RTEK? Why stock ports? Why not turbo?

AWR style ducts with 3" high temp hoses from the S5 bumper inlets with our super secret naca duct adaptors.
NASA Performance touring is a points system. In which aero modifications such as spoilers, wings, spliters, etc all take points. And there is not much reason to run that stuff in the lower PT classes, especially with such a well balanced chassis because the speeds are just not that high where it makes a difference. We are taking no points for aero mods. It is a build kinda in the spirit of classes like spec miata and spec 944 which are both stock aero classes.
We also take points if we change the sway bars in any way and have found no reason to do so. We have not thus far found any real good reason to remove the rear sway bar, in that the handling does improve in such a way as to make it worth taking the points. I know the general concensus is the car "feels better" but i have not seen that it is any faster... or lower lap times.
Rtek working great so far other than the silly palm interface...would love to have it be updated to run on android.
Stock port and non-turbo to keep it in a lower class and thus an easier budget. As HP increases so does the money hemorrhaging...
Currently we are running 235 Nitto NT-01 tires on 8.5" wide RPF1s.
We will see how it does in competition. Our first race weekend we did not have any other cars to race in PTD.

Looks like FC's will be running rampant in PTD this coming season. I thought I was the only one, now I see two more and know of another being built. What regions are you guys from, plan on making to Nationals this year?

My base class is PTD as a TII with an engine swap, dyno classed at 185rwhp at 2850lbs.
+8 tires, 255 RA1, base tire in PTD is 245
+3 shocks
+1 inverted shocks, the Stance coilover front struts are inverted
+2 springs
+2 sway bars
+3 air dam
I'm looking at changing a few things for next season. It's interesting and helpful to see what other FC racers are using for their points.

The horsepower is nice, lugging that much weight around, not so much. You should be close to that, from my understanding the N/A rotaries respond well with a true racing exhaust.
The car still has the original diff, over 140,000 miles on it and holding up well. Looking at possibly upgrading if I can make it work in the points.

Yeah we aren't close to that. The engine in the car is a mismatch of parts. Used seals and springs. It was worn out when I assembled it. We just wanted to get it on track and start tuning the suspension. I have all the 89 hard parts to build an engine. I just need to buy all the seals and springs so it can be assembled. We have been focusing on enduro's so will probably end up with a proper ITS car by the time it is finished, so we can stay in E2. Although I would love to run a light flywheel, lexan, seam weld ect...

That's one thing I really like about the NASA Performance Touring rules, you can play around and experiment with performance parts that make sense and make the car a joy to drive. Plus your car won't be deemed illegal because the screws holding the washer bottle to the fenderwell don't have the factory original zinc coating.

Under Free Mods:
"OEM ECU/PCM reprogramming via reflashing or replacement/aftermarket ROM chips or
simple ROM boards (The OEM ECU/PCM box/housing and hardware must be used)."
Since the Rtek is a simple ROM board that in effect reprograms the stock fuel and timing maps, it is free....
