My rx7 reborn thread

Hi!
First of all..
Ive been into rotary for some years now and i started of with the red ugly one below. I bought it pretty cheap for three years ago and was going to build a nice daily driver. That didnt happend.
I started of with a really strickt budget and only bought parts to get it running. It ended up with a LT8 since i didnt get the jspec engine and stuff to run.
After a few months my car got blue! Yea, ended up quite good but with a bad finnish since im one of the guys doing EVERYTHING myself!
The story goes on.. More parts showed up at the post office and the car went from daily driver to street racer.. As drifting got more and more popular in Norway i wanted to compete in the series in north. Started of with a almost standard suspension but found out that i wanted it stiffer.
So my modlist was:

SUSPENSION:
-Tein RA coilovers
-Masdatrix front camber/caster plates
-Racingbeat anti-sway bars
-Mazdatrix swaybars endlinks
-Energy suspension bushings
-DTSS eliminator
-Racing Diff mounts (Fixed my Kaaz clunk)
-Kaaz 1.5way diff
-Super angle now kit
-Low profile tires on 17" and 18" rims
-Mazdatrix Rear Camber adjuster

Last winter (05/06) i figured out i needed more power. I found a 13bRE that suited my needs and stuffed alot of cool parts on it
ENGINE:
-20k km 13bRE
-Fully rebuild
-ported s4 exhaust
-Gt35R
-Microtech LT8 (from the old engine)
-720/1600 injectors
-Custom fuel rails
-Custom SSbraiden fuel lines
-Walbro pump
-Custom Cosmo TB elbow
-Ebay FMIC setup
-Custom exhaust with mazdatrix parts (96db)

In the end the car got really nice and my driving skills got better and better.
In august 07 the car got painted orange and i had to ditch the t2 hood after a little bumper kiss with a 180sx :wallbash:

Then 2 weeks after repaint i wrecked the car!

It was red 3 years ago, then blue 2 years ago, then orange 2 months ago and then wrecked!

Sindregutt 10-07-07 01:33 PM

AFter the crash i didnt know what to do so the car was left alone for two weeks. I almost had it out for sale really cheap...
BUT! a couple of beers and looking at racing vids got me back on track :) I called a friend of mine that had a FC chassie with a rollcage... Next day i picked it up!

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a10...g?t=1191781613

1 week after i bought it i ended up 10. in a drifting competition.. Not good but since i managed to put an entire FC together in just 5 days while i was working 12 hours a day i was satisfied...

SOOOO WHAT DO I WANT NOW?!?!
I want a relible FC with alot of nice race mods! The car is not ONLY drifting but also time attack and autoX

This thread is about my projects winter 07/08... Maybe boring for you guys.. i dont know.. but ill try to update it now and then with some pictures of my mods.
TODO list:
-Hardcore VMOUNT setup
-Modify NA hood
-Modify front bumper for better air flow etc
-Finnishing up the rear Wing
-Repaint rims
-Making it "race ready" inside (rollcage polstering, gauges, etc)
-Bodykit?!
-Fixing all the oil leeks on the engine
-Get a better engine tune!

TehMonkay 10-07-07 01:53 PM

Honestly i think the car looked 16x better blue. What blue is that?

Sindregutt 10-07-07 02:09 PM

hehe i totally agree.. The reason it got orange is because i needed something more eye catching. I still belive it would`ve become pretty good with alot of stickers etc, but thats history!
The blue is lamborghini eple candy blue. Nice truue blue color!

Sindregutt 10-07-07 02:29 PM

Many of you probably dont like cars like this, but this gives me inspirations of what i need. Maybe ill go for a full bodykit after all!

TehMonkay 10-07-07 02:30 PM

That car has FD oil coolers. Drop the rims and get a better looking spoiler, like the re-amemiya one, and it would look alright.

Sindregutt 10-07-07 02:48 PM

Yea, i got some really nice 18" rims and alot of 17" random rims..
About the oil cooling. How do people do it when they build a vmount? I want to have important parts as far behind as possible since small crashes arent unusual :P
I still dont know with the wing... I got one we made at work but it might be to overkill!
The first thing ill do is to change the Tein HA coilovers that are allready mounted on the new rx7 with the RAs from the old one.

One more thing i want to do is to modify my knockles so i get even more turning angle.. It helped alot with the super angle now kit but the more the better!

TehMonkay 10-07-07 02:51 PM

I'm guessing they mount it far back as possible when drifting, however, porsche runs its radiators similar to how the oil coolers are mounted on that fc, thats also how the fd mounts the oil coolers, i'd just mount it there, make sure the low oil level light works, and keep spares handy.

Sindregutt 10-07-07 02:57 PM

Sounds like a good ide!
Stock FD coolers will keep the temp low enaugh?
Ive allready been saved by the oil low light when i managed to short the ign +12v through one of the oil cooler SS lines.. i lost 1 gallon of oil in just a few sec!

88rxn/a 10-07-07 03:53 PM

the pic when its blue and the flames is just kick ass!!

sub9lulu 10-07-07 03:53 PM

the stock FC oil cooler is more than enuf to cool the oil, and u can even use 2 of them if u think one doesnt cool enuf

i love the blue btw

Sindregutt 10-07-07 04:21 PM

If im gonna keep the stock oil cooler where should it be mounted when im going Vmount? Thats whats bothers me. I dont want it blocking the airflow to the rad and IC..
It was really nice and clean when it was blue! If i one day gonna have a FC on the road again itll be true blue like it was :)
Here is a little movie when it was blue (yea i know, been posted before!) http://s8.photobucket.com/albums/a10...7breisladd.flv

Sindregutt 10-07-07 04:25 PM

Nice black stripes....

Sindregutt 10-07-07 04:28 PM

Back to the building.
I got myself a set of 6pt seat belts and im gonna use the old OMP seats in the new chassie. Since the new chassie got a rollcage i bang my head to the cage all the time. How do you guys mount the seats? Now i got 90deg angles with almost no gap between the seat and the stock FC rails. I really need to get the seat lower!
Where do you fasten the 6pt seat belt? i have plates that can be welded on to the chassie but havnt really figured out where its nice to weld em!

Drifting = Bouncing off the rev limiter while not actually being at speed.

I think you could use all of the oil cooling upgrades you can get if you drift, add an oil temp gauge just so you can see.

Sindregutt 10-07-07 05:23 PM

Ive always belived that the stock FC one was good enaugh. Then a friend of mine got a jspec one with a oil temp gauge and he said he had problems with high oil temp when drifting.. Ill see what i can find. But two new coolers and new lines, each mounted where the brake cooling duct is, would`ve been the best!

turboefini88 10-07-07 05:45 PM

Suggestion on he oil cooling. I personally will be running dual earls oil coolers with Efans. Efficient and will help pull air over the coolers when your sideways and not getting flow over them. :D

BTW, love the orange. Had a spicy orange MSP and seriously considered doing my FC that color.

Sindregutt 10-07-07 08:04 PM

Good ide! Earls cooler maybe to expensive hehe but summit got other brands too!
Nice that the dollar is really low now :) Parts get cheaper :)

Sindregutt 10-08-07 01:03 PM

:) Finally got the new rims on with spacers!
Im pleased with how they fit. They`ll be painted with black senter and the color of the car on the polished alu edge...
Since the car is going to have a eye catching color i dont think silver colored rims will look good!

Syncro 10-08-07 01:22 PM

Keep at it :D

(I'm the un-official build-up thread encourager!)

Sindregutt 10-08-07 01:30 PM

:D nice nice... Can i join the "The 7 ruined my life" club? haha
Tomorrow ill change coilovers from Tein HA to RA and install the superangle now kit, antisway bars and camberplates.. Driftmeet next weekend so ill try to make it!

Sindregutt 10-10-07 01:35 PM

arh im working to much.. Havnt had the time to do anything yet! I need to get as much as possible done before november because then im gonna start building my fathers 1gen too...

TehMonkay 11-01-07 11:21 PM

He built a damn nice car and had fun driving it.

If you don't like drifting who gives a shit here, it's still a free country. For all I know norway is too.

Im sure drifitng is a waste of money for all of the people who are obviously poor and have nothing who are in D1 as well.

I dont even like drifitng that much myself and i can see the ignorance in your post.

Not to mention you can lock up the brakes in any form of driving, not just drifitng, he wasnt even in a drift when it happened he was braking.

TehMonkay 11-01-07 11:25 PM

Also, just wondering, sindregutt, didn't I give you advice for you for buying a turbo a long time ago.

Sindregutt 11-13-07 12:13 PM

hehe, bla bla bla bla.. We`ve heard it before psiturbo...

Anyway, i guess this thread has become "yet another build-up thread without any action"..
Thats gonna change! I finally manage to get my fathers RX7 out of the garage and now i just need to move some things to the rx7 parts-"barn" :D

Nothing much has happend since last time other than i recived the raceonusa "gpsport" kit a few days ago. Today i fitted the bumpers etc (DAMN!! Raceonusa got BAAAD molds :S)

Since im one of the "drift"-guys im gonna make my own (much better) molds so i can have a few kits in spare :D

Ive also modded my shock strut towers to allow more camber and caster!
Pics update next weekend!

TheMonkey: Probably? I got so many advices so i just ended up with the GT35R turbo. What turbo do you prefere? My goal is still 400rwhp and i might change the turbo because of the bad Garret Ball Bearings :S

Sindre

Ks86Fc 11-13-07 01:14 PM

I like the lambo blue, badass, but orange is cool too! Spicy Orange is my fav, off my old 03 Mazdaspeed Protege.

Sindregutt 11-18-07 01:44 PM

Havnt done anything to my car this weekend either but i have filled the rx7-barn with ALOT of parts!
The car is finally in the garage so tomorrow im gonna start building the vmount.

What kind of IC`s have you guys with vmount used on your setup?
I dont know if im gonna buy a new one or re weld the in/out on my old FMIC..

Sindre

Sindregutt 11-18-07 02:00 PM

Yea! Spending money and racing the rx7 is really adicting. Its like cocain!
Dont know how many times ive blown the budget :) ... now i dont have budgets anymore haha. I wish i was living in the states, though.. Would have saved alot of money on parts!
What is the CYM color again? The reason im going orange AGAIN is because we got this silly "team" color theme stuff.. 4 drift/track cars in the same color :D Thats pretty unusal over here!

I went out to take some pictures but i guess all of you have seen a raceonusa gpsport kit before!

Sindregutt 11-19-07 02:21 PM

arhh im trying to upload some pictures but that wasnt going to be easy!!!

Anyway.. I tried to figure out where to have the rad and IC, and i got some questions.
Is the Koyo radiator good enaugh?
With my FMIC setup i had problems with the engine getting pretty hot.
I got the dual flex-a-lite puller fan..
What kind of angle do you have on the radiator? And do you shop all the mounting brackets etc in front to get a better flow?

Sindre

Sindregutt 11-19-07 02:32 PM

i just got another ide.. Since im planning to build it "pickup style".. Why just dont i mount the radiator in the back of the car with ducting out of the license plate hole...

MazdaMike02 11-19-07 03:15 PM

CYM is Competition Yellow Mica...rares FD production color and its sexy as hell IMO I love yellow.

SkyWalker 11-19-07 04:17 PM

definatly go with the full body kit

Sindregutt 11-20-07 01:55 AM

Go with the full bodykit? Yea i got the gpsport kit but i dont know about wider fenders yet!

Here are some pictures of my vmount. Still havnt figured out what angle i want on the radiator and how far away from the engine....

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a10...g?t=1195544958

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a10...g?t=1195545672

I also wanna get rid of the koyo and get a bigger rad but ive allready chopped of the filler tube :P

phoenix7 11-20-07 02:19 AM

good to see you back on the 7. What hood will you use?

Sindregutt 11-20-07 02:27 AM

Yea feels good to be back in the garage! I really hope i dont have the heat problems after all the work with the vmount :D
Im gonna use stock hoods with rhdjapan reversed glassfiber scoop. Since i sometimes bump into things and wreck hoods and bumpers im making molds of everything!

Sindregutt 11-20-07 02:41 AM

here is the scoop im gonna use on the alu NA hood

https://www.rhdjapan.com/images/prod...mal/Image3.jpg

Exlex 11-20-07 02:57 AM

Dude! Nice looking, long time no talk, we have to catch up on all the things you are doing. I might be intrested in the koyo if you want to sell it cheap to me ;) I'm also considering v-mount but I want to drive my car next summer so I will probably just build a front mount to save fabrication time.

And no, I didn't drive the car at all this year :(

Sindregutt 11-20-07 03:13 AM

Thanks Exlex! Much has happend since last time we meet! I expect to see you`re car ready next year :D!! If i buy a new radiator you can have it cheap! but the filler tube is chopped of so you have to re-weld it :P
FMIC is soo much more easy than vmount but im tired of wrecking IC`s and i hope i get better cooling with vmount too!

Exlex 11-20-07 04:45 AM

yeah dude I get what you mean, I didn't even know you had crashed your car :/ but luckily enough fc shells are cheap! ;) If you are over here let me now! or maybe I should come over for some "vacation"! ;)

Sindregutt 11-20-07 05:25 AM

You should come to norway next year when the tracks are open again! Much actioN :D
Fc shells arent so expensive but i still payed 4000usd for a crappy roller with a rollcage.. It is norwegian so thats why it was expensive. I have another shell for 400usd :)

BTW Exlex, i got two spare coilovers kit! One Tein RA and one Tein HA.. Do you need one? :D

Exlex 11-20-07 06:25 AM

Depends on price, I just completeted my Yellow koni with Groundcontrol coiloverkit and adjustable topmount. Thinking back on it I should just have bought the coilvers I wanted since the price is not that far away ;)

RotaryJun 11-20-07 03:10 PM

I just gotta say it, that is an awesome pic of it drifting in blue. Subscribed.

phoenix7 11-20-07 03:29 PM

what's the timeframe? when are you hitting the track again?

Sindregutt 11-21-07 01:25 AM

I loved to drive the car when it was blue.. Looked good and it was still okey for the street :) Now its a pain to drive on the street!
I think the license day is in the end of march! I hope to be almost done at the end of january so i can get my fathers rx7 rolling to!
This is what im gonna do:

Exterior:
-Make/Buy and mount a wing
-Make hood scoop
-Make a pickup hatch
-Fit gpsport kit and make molds for copying (for own use..)
-Repaint the car in orange
-Shine my rims
-Make some decals (not for hp gain)

Interior:
-Mount bucket seats and six point seat belts
-Re position the battery
-Get the Carputer up and running (logging etc)
-Paint the inside black (rollcage orange)

Suspension:
-Fab the strut towers so the mazdatrix camber plate fits
-Mount racingbeat anti-sway bar
-Four wheel alignment

Engine:
-Mount dual oil cooler system
-Fab the vmount
-Fab a box for the air filter
-MSD Ctrl and new coils?
-Overhaul?
-Bigger intake ports?
-Aquamist?

I dont know if im gonna do the stuff in blue but i feel i should overhaul the engine just in case so i dont loose many weeks in the middle of the season!
I always forget some things so more thinks will be added to the list.

Sindre

phoenix7 11-21-07 03:04 AM

when you say make a "pick-up hatch" are you saying you want to make it like the Nissan silvia truck?

Part of the rigidity that makes the FC handle well comes for the hatch (the first in Japan like this). It might weigh a lot but removing it entirely might not be the best thing to do. Have you looked into alternatives?

RX7freak08 11-21-07 07:09 AM

Very nice.

Sindregutt 11-21-07 07:35 AM

The only reason for making the mr2/silvia/pickup rear end is to make it different. It might turn out ugly. If so ill just trash it because its not going to be permanent.
I didnt think of the aerodynamics! I will loose downforce on the rear end in higher speeds without the hatch? Or did you mean the stiffness in the hatch? Its more like a mr2 style so i think it will become stiff enaugh. Maybe i misunderstand..
One other ide that has crossed my mind is to change the glass with +-5mm Lexan. Thats probably a good solution!

Sindre

Sindregutt 11-23-07 04:54 AM

VMount mounts are done.. Gonna start with the ducting tonight then im will put it on-hold for a while since i cant weld aluminum myself. Next step will be to remove everything out of the car (seats, wire harness ++) and prepp it for paint. Hopefully ill have time to make a mold of the front bumper this weekend too! If i just stay away from the alcohol :aroused:

Sindregutt 01-09-08 11:02 AM

Wohhshaa!!
Time to begin building for real. 3months until first trackday!
Ive had a loong vecation this xmas. Was a trip to caribbean and usa then xmas holiday up in the mountains. Now im back, ready to build!

One cool thing i ended up with this weekend is a new daily driver :) 1987 turbo2 with 13bREW engine! I also hope to have this on the road befor may!

This week im gonna have my bodykit ready for copying.
Here are some pictures befor and after filler primer. Hell`a job to get those parts smooth and i hate sanding :squintfin

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a10...g?t=1199898032

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a10...g?t=1199898050

I hope i got a new pair of skirts and bumper next week so i can paint the hole car the first week in Feb. In the meantime i have to wire MS1 ecu to the rew driven FC.

Sindre

Killert2 01-09-08 02:48 PM

Hey you think you could PM me the kind or blue and orgne you used? and how you made that front bumper looks so good?
