My first attempt at powder coating

here are a few misc. parts out of the media blaster.

The heater pipe and the alternator bracket are half blasted for reference.
As soon as my lim is cool enough to touch I will post a pic of it powder coated. It is cooling in the oven right now.

Here is the lim. You can't tell too much from the pictures but in person there is a big difference. I don't think I preheated the part hot enough or long enough. I got a lot of small bubbles in some areas, Other then that I am happy with the results for my first time. The uim is just media blasted to compare. The color the lim is supposed to be is chrome but it looks more like polished aluminum.

My second attempt

here is the uim on my second attempt. I layed the powder a little thicker. I think it is a bit more glossy, but I got a couple sags. No big deal I can sand them out. What do you guys think? Any tips for a noob?

Here are some more pics. Sorry for slacking, Caught a cold Saturday. I did get a few more things done. I am going to wet sand and recoat my manifolds and water pump housing. I think they will be about flawless then, everything else is looking great. I was going to do my alternater housing but I think I am going to get a S6 and do it instead. Besides that, I think all I have left on the motor is my pulleys and oil return for my turbo. Then it is on to all the suspension. I bought the master kit of black poly bushings to reinstall with.

Ha Ha the smell in the house is bad enough. I don't have enough electric for 220 in the garage yet (very soon though I have a new larger breaker box and the wiring just waiting on a new meter loop and the electric company). That oven in the pic is crap only one burner works and I have a new one. For the time being I have just been switching them when I need to powder coat. Almost as much hassle as pushing the rider, quad, kids bikes, stroller, mower trailer, and the 7 out of the garage just to media blast and powder coat.

Your engine bay looks clean. The powder did run a bit on the manifold. No big deal though.

Yo, anyone know how well powder coating holds up with engine heat on the intake etc, i've been thinking of ceramic coating my direct engine parts, but if I can scape with powder coating i'll stick to that. Looks awesome tho

Ceramic coat works great for exhuast parts. It is not that expensive and it looks great. I had my headers done on my bike and atv about four years ago and it still looks good. Probably what I am going to do with my downpipe and exhuast manifold.

if you check out that website that i linked, they also have ceramic stuff too. only problem is, you have to bake it at like 750, and most ovens cannont get that hot. nice thing is though, you can ceramic coat stuff like exhausts, just make sure not to touch it, bolt it up, and let the exhaust temps do the cooking. comes out great 90% of the time. its a matter of trial and error, its like fiberglassing, you cant be afraid of ******* it up once or twice.
its metal, you cant **** it up too bad.

Lloyd

oh, and yes, powder coating holds up 10000000x better than any form of paint. no solvent can get through it, and it hold up great to fade and heat. all you have to do is clean it once and awhile, it will be your best friend if you maintain it. (ie wiping it down every GREAT once and awhile)

[QUOTE=badsevn;8199762]second for columbiacoatings. And it is a no-no to coat mating surfaces, studs, threaded holes, etc. They make special masking tape, silicone caps and plugs for those parts. This is what a properly coated manifold should look like.

QUOTE]

actually, if you look at the end where it looks to be a cooling nipple or some ****, that is fucked up. he should have taken that off and capped it. whatever that **** is, and whatever that part is, its wrong.

doesnt matter. an orfice is an orfice and all should be either taped off or taken apart and properly plugged.

I just realized I made the same mistake on my water pump housing where the radiator hose mounts. I taped off all the mating surfaces with painters tape before I sprayed them then carefully peeled it off before I baked them.
