lighting upgrade has begun- 5w elef LED
On the advice of another member I ordered and installed my 5w elef-IV led bulbs for the brake lights and amber turn signal bulbs.
I have smoked out lenses and while I felt the light output was sufficient I got worried when on a run last year not being able to see some FD's tail lights with 99 spec and LED conversions.
I found those lights to be hard to see.
Let me say these bulbs are no joke, they are like a piece of art. You have to splice them in but they include a little piece of heat shrink and its very easy to do.
I took these pictures, flash off, in the daytime obviously. Will have to wait for night time shots.
Next up are my self fabricated HID projector lights, I have the car wired up for it already, another easy task thanks to the high quality wiring provided in the retro HID kit.
this is just the parking lights

now I just have to wait for darkness to finish aiming and take illuminated shots
I originally had clear lenses made, but decided to go with these plastic lenses instead because they have DOT markings on them. At a local cruise night cops were actually checking lights and tires for DOT markings.

im going to take some night shots, I have pics of when I installed these tails originally so hopefully it shows up in comparison photos.
I know the stop and parking lights are light years ahead of where they were before, the turn signals are harder to tell because they come on for so short.

Rob, those came out amazing! The only thing I don't like about the Elefs with the reflector cap is the dead spot they have but they are literally night and day difference. I don't see them looking as pretty in modernized tails due to the plain "reflectors" of the lights. If you build a custom reflector to mimic the diffused pattern of the stock diffused lenses, then you'd be set

I just looked at the price on those bulbs, I don't know if many here will be willing to throw down that kind of cash on them .

even I will admit its a bit much for bulbs, but in regards to other things I have spent money on for the car its a small price to pay for safety, and I have not put any money into the car since last year besides these lighting upgrades so I figured just order it and not think about it.

the only other thing I am going to do is put regular led bulbs in the other lights so they are cleaner, and I do have to figure out a resistor for the turn signals, they are a little fast but not to the point of being obnoxious. You splice the 3 wires in, then just twist them into the socket, they go in real easy.
duo- i got the HID it from theretrofitsource.com, this is where all the kits come from for the $500-$900 kits you see sold on this board. I used my existing h4 conversion housings for the mount, but the lens I got from a pilot automotive housing because they carry the DOT markings on them. I KNOW they are not DOT, but at least at quick glance they appear to be. They are also plastic lens while most are glass, but the housing itself on the pilot sucked in comparison to my existing h4 conversion housing so I used both. It did require me to make a small spacer for the lens but again that was pretty simple.
The wiring included with the retrofit kit is really nice, you dont need anything and anyone can install it. I also like that power is no longer used from the factory harness, that thing aint getting no younger.

They are expensive but well worth it. They use genuine Osram 5w LED joules and the whole case is a big heatsink. Unless you run them on high power for a long long period of time, heat is no issue. I'm going to try the diffused cap version for my S4 lights. I have these in my Kia and they are rediculously awesome. Best "plug and play" LEDs I've ever seen

Yikes! Expensive little suckers, they do look good though, especially in the tinted housings....i wonder if they might be too bright in regular tails?
I got some cheap LED replacements for the tails, signals and side markers, the color is great, but the intensity could be better. Looks like you've found the answer.

No, you dont want to do that. The optics would be screwed up. They offer two versions, one with the reflector cap like Rob has and I have in my Kia, and one with a diffuser cap which spreads he light out accross the lense instead of the reflector. I believe the diffuser cap would work best for S4 lights.
